Professor Nagy is among the best professors here at UCLA. I can't speak for the people who think that he's rude, mean or whatever, I can only speak from experience; from that, then, I will tell you that Professor Nagy is a sweet and genuine professor who cares for his students' education. If you've a general thirst for knowledge, for learning, then talk to him and he'll facilitate your growth.
I took Professor Nagy's GE Cluster course on mythology freshman year. It was a wonderful experience. If at all possible, fight for a spot in Katherine McLoone's discussion section. Words cannot express the wonderful and instructive nature of Ms. McLoone. It's a class I'd take again in a heartbeat.
We're here to learn, not to skim. Learn and live ~
I am a Comm Studies major but took English 111F with Nagy just for fun, and really had a good time. I learned so much about a niche subject - Celtic Folklore - in a relatively easy and fun environment. The research paper was on a topic of our choice, and the midterm and final both were take-home essay exams. Nagy is easy-going and passionate about his subject matter, and very available for class talk or future plans.
This man is genuinely rude, petulant and self-absorbed to an incredible degree. This class is all about him, which he makes clear from the outset and repeats at frequent intervals. I have twice seen this man go into petulant rants in class, and speak very badly of students who were not present (people who were late, missed a class, etc.).
This man does not just crow about his own accomplishments, he puts down others. Do not go into this class expecting to do anything but regurgitate Nagy's ideas back to him. Do not disagree with ANY idea he puts forth, do not attempt original thinking, et cetera.
Nagy is perhaps the best professor that I have had at UCLA. I took the class English 111F with a friend on a whim (literally ran into her on the way to the first meeting and decided to check it out). We went to his first office hours and he seemed genuinely interested in getting to know us. Throughout the quarter he was incredibly helpful, like people have said, he allows re-writes and is open to your ides. Class is a MUST, but I had an emergency and had to miss a few classes and he had no problem meeting with me outside. If you're willing to put in some work, it's a great class.
