TA for our fall quarter needs to be trained better. Inconsistent grading all around. Never taking another pol sci class again.
I enjoyed taking PS20 with Mr. Perry! He is very knowledgeable and grades papers very quickly, which is very nice. This class was not really too hard so as long as you do the work, its almost certain that youll get an A.
I took Dr. Perry for PS 137A but there's no option for that so here's my review here!
Dr. Perry is very nice and understanding. Very straightforward class, just 5 2-3 page papers, 1 research precis and one final paper (which can be an extension of the precis!)
Easy A, IR Theory is a weakness of mine and this class was very doable!
awesome professor. has bad luck but makes up for it by being a notoriously easy grader. get the work done on time (and while following instructions), you are guaranteed a minimum A-. would recommend!
Wouldn’t take again.
A good portion of our class struggled
Grade distribution is very outdated be warned.
Highly highly highly recommend taking this class. Great class and professor. Perry cares more about his students learning than if they write the perfect essay. Entire grade was midterm and final papers, but they are graded very fairly and you are given the entire quarter to prepare for them. Highly recommend!!
If you already know the foundational topics of International Relations such as realism, democratic peace theory, constructivism, etc don't bother with this class because that's essentially the entirety of the class. I took this class thinking it would dive deeper into IR theories but it was all surface level topics I had already learned in another IR class. Was not very intellectually fulfilling imo.
Professor Perry is very intelligent about IR but he has an erratic personality. Almost always late to his lectures, stutters a lot which makes it difficult to fully comprehend his lectures, and talks fast. He does lecture with slides which does supplement to the fact that he stutters a lot. Personally, it kind of stressed me out because he always seemed on edge. He doesn't properly go over assignment instructions making it difficult to really understand what he wants; because of this we would spend 40 minutes of class time answering basic questions about exams and assignments which should've been addressed more clearly in the first place. The coursework includes 2 weekly readings, 1 weekly reading response (1 page single spaced or 2 pages double spaced), and 2 exams (in class blue book essays or an 8pg midterm/15pg final). Easy grader but if you actually want to dive deep into IR, take a different class.
Writing and Reading heavy but very doable. Final was a research essay building off of your midterm, which was a précis. Then the other assignments where 5 short 2-page "Mini Papers" that are graded based on understanding overall points rather than mastery.
