One of the best professors at ucla! Even though coming into the course I had little interest in the topic of Africa, her lecture made the material interesting. She is an amazing woman, i learned a lot from her lectures.

She's also very caring. she really wants students to contribute and i loved that about her. I would highly recommend taking her class, even if the topic may not seem that interesting.

Professor Carney is one of the most engaging professors I have had at UCLA. Not only does she genuinely care about her students but her lectures are very interesting and easy to follow. The whole grade is midterm (40%) and final (60%) which can seem a little daunting but overall the exams were word for word her lectures. She is extremely kind in office hours and really wants to get to know her students and help them professionally and academically. Definitely take this class with her.

Prof. Carney is truly inspirational. She knows a lot and does go through the material fast, but use your common sense to pick out what is important. She even gave us a take home final! Take this class- it's worth it, and aside from the readings (which aren't even that crucial to the test), this class is not a lot of work.

Geography 135

I am incredibly surprised by the positive evaluations of Professor Carney. She is a windbag, know it all, blowhard, who thinks its her job to harangue students about how evil the US is and how we should all care about Africa. I didn't learn anything substantial whatsoever in that class. If you already love Africa and plan on being an NGO or human rights worker there, then this is the class for you. If you're anyone else, STAY AWAY!!! It's boring and the lectures are disjointed and scattered. She also has a very high (undeservedly so in my opinion) opinion of herself that gets on the nerves after a couple weeks. STAY AWAY, DONT BE FOOLED BY THE OTHER REVIEWS!!!!!

This class was a great course. The readings were interesting and no too lengthy for an upper division course. Professor Carney is an engaging lecturer, and knows a lot about the topics. This class is pretty low-maintenance, but there is a final group project (presentation and paper) that is due during finals week, so don't wait until the last minute.
