The way his grading scheme works is youll have a weekly quiz testing you on the material you learned the week before. Theres also a daily content review problem along with question asking you "what was the most important thing you learned today" which I would just write like 50 words and get full credits. Each week you will also recieve around a 30 problem assignment you must complete with 5% taken off each problem you get wrong (it opens an AI tutor up after you get the question wrong though which is super useful). It definitely is a bit of a workload but the weekly assignment is definitely doable if you dont leave it until last minute. There are also 2 midterms and 1 final which have questions that are basically the exact concepts he gives you on the study guides. As long as you understand the study guides you'll be completely fine. Our class median for the 1st midterm was a 91.2% and 2nd was 89%. As for his lectures, he uses iclicker to take attendance for a participation grade. For some context I had never taken a calculus class, so I found his in class teaching difficult to understand and I would end up reteaching it to myself or having the AI tutor guide me through it on the homework. He doesnt solve too many problems each lesson which is what helps me understand the conept, however, he goes into depth of the conceptual understanding. I believe he is a very fair grader and you get out of it as much effort as you put into it! Jukka definitely cares about his students so if you are struggling in the class he will make office hours to speak one-on-one. He would also often push back the due dates for weekly assignments, in the situations his office hour videos (where he solves the difficult problems from the weekly homework) didnt upload at an adequate time.
Great professor in many ways. Was very and engaging in class, and provided so many opportunities to learn the material which I mostly failed to take advantage of. My only complaint is that he is very much a "math guy" and thus gets very far into the weeds of what makes certain math concepts work the way they do, I think the class would be easier if he focused more on what you actually need to do and how to do it, but I do see the educational value in his approach. Basically he is the perfect professor for math majors. and still a very good one for everyone else.
He was constantly holding extra sessions to help people and really did everything possible to get you prepared. I slacked off in this class and absolutely bombed both midterms. When I actually sat down and went through everything in preparation for the final I realized that if you actually keep up with the class both midterms are extremely management, especially midterm 1 don't slack on midterm 1 its free points if you're actually putting in the work.
He has nothing but you're best interest in mind. I don't remember my exact midterm grades, 70 something on midterm one and like a low 60 on number 2, so rough stuff. However, after the class had a pretty rough performance on midterm 2 he actually changed the grading structure of the class just a few weeks before the final so that your final would replace your worse midterm if you did better on the final. (He actually originally made it so that your better midterm replaced the worse one but was told he couldn't by the department, which was great for me cause both my midterms were lackluster but worse for the class as a whole), which I think just shows that he really wants the best for everyone in his class. After I actually utilized everything he had been putting out there, and honestly I still just scratched the surface as it was mostly cramming, I was able to get a high grade on the final and escape with an A in the class.
The guy literally must be working 80 hour weeks if he is providing as much stuff for his other classes as he did for this one, so many sessions outside of class and they're all recorded!
Overall definitely a legit class so don't go in thinking you'll coast, maybe you will if you took it in high school, but if you actually take it seriously and use what hes giving you an A is very very achievable. Oh and also he tracks attendance with iclicker so seating is brutal so get to class early and don't skip.
I am naturally not the best at math, and having taken my first calculus class at UCLA was definitely a challenge. That being said, Professor Jukka was the best person to teach it.
Don't be scared with the workload, that truly is the way to learn. He is the funniest professor I've had so far, and genuinely cares that his students learn and actually understand.
I do strongly encourage that you go to office hours, because that's where you can ask all your questions.
If he is offered as a professor, choose his class!!!!
Professor Jukka is one of the best professors I have ever had. He is truly one of the sweetest people ever. I failed this class the first time I took it, and Jukka made everything so much easier to understand the second time around. He dedicates so much of his personal time to having multiple student hours where he goes through homework problems. If you can take this class with him, please do. He is the best and truly cares about his students so much.
The GOAT of the UCLA Math Department. If I could take him for every math class, I would. As a professor, he is absolutely unbelievable, and you'll only understand what I mean once you've taken him. He cares so much about his students and got your back.
Jukka is nerdy, funny, and professional all in one (my best compliment). Occasionally he throws a really funny and lowkey joke out of nowhere during his lectures. Very clear on the class objectives and materials. Lenient grading and reasonable homework. Also super responsive and responsible. He even pretends there are students going to his office whereas in fact he was just recording an extra video going through hw/worksheet with no students present in his office hours. Highly recommend.
This class honestly felt like a full-time job. I took an otherwise light workload the quarter I enrolled, and I still found myself overwhelmed at times. We had weekly worksheets (graded for completion), homework assignments with about 30 questions graded for accuracy, daily classes with mandatory attendance for clicker questions, weekly quizzes (which ended up being canceled due to the fires—we just did them together in class), and reflections plus 1–2 short questions at the end of each lecture (though I don’t think he’ll keep that part for future quarters).
My biggest tip: the study guides he gives are an accurate reflection of what will be on the exams. If you can confidently get through the practice midterms, you’ll be fine on the actual ones—he slightly changes the problem, but the concepts stay the same.
Jukka truly cares about his students. He’s got his quirks—like his deep love for math and commitment to helping students—but he genuinely wants you to succeed. The material is hard no matter who you take it with, so don’t think another professor will necessarily make it easier.
One thing to know: Jukka does teach straight from the slides, and sometimes his explanations can be hard to follow, which is why I highly recommend going to his office hours (he holds them almost every day, even Sundays) or your TA’s sessions.
I also took another class with him, and he was the only professor who went out of his way to fight for us—he advocated for allowing cheat sheets and giving us real study guides. That alone says a lot about his character and how much he wants to support students.

Not because there's anything astounding you need to know about the course, but because it will give you an idea right off the bat of just what a wonderful human being Jukka is.
Calculus can be a very tough course for many. Jukka knows that and treats every student with the utmost care and respect as a result. Never once did I feel like he wouldn't understand my extenuating circumstances or that he wanted me to fail. Myself and my friends all agreed that the dedication he puts into making comprehensive study materials and organizing review sessions (often on the weekends and late into the evenings, out of his own free time) is unparalleled. Tests were difficult but I never felt they were "unfair", as he thoroughly prepared us for the types of problems we could see on the exam.
Yes, the other reviews are right, there is a lot of homework. But the class was never a burden on me and I've never been this engaged in a math class before, simply because of the immense work and joy Jukka has put into 31AL and, I assume, all his other classes.
To anyone reading this who may have their doubts: This class, like most, is all about how inspired you feel to attack it, and Jukka is someone who inspires you to do your best and succeed. I look forward to taking a class with him next quarter and can confidently say that he is the best professor I've had at UCLA thus far.
Jukka is the absolute best! He was very willing to help all of his students out by hosting multiple student hours a week. He would often go over homework questions and explain to us how to work through it. The workload is kind of a lot but as long as you start early and not wait until last minute you should be fine. The class is structured in a helpful manner with a post class reflection assignment as well as content review questions (a question based on material taught during lecture). It really helped with practicing what we just learned that very day. His practice exams are very similar to the actual exams and he is very fair in the types of questions that are on the midterms/final exams. I cannot stress enough how much of a good teacher Jukka is and if you have the opportunity to take him, you 100% should!
