If you want an easy class with an easy workload, this class is not for you.

That being said, if you want an amazing professor who challenges you and takes so much time out of his day to ensure that you are learning and understand the material at a deep level, this is the class for you! (Definitely the type of class that Engineering majors should be taking to prepare for future coursework!)

Though some may argue that Jukka does not "support" his students because of the extensive material and heavier courseload, I would argue that the aspect of "support" comes from the fact that the extensive homework (which is due at the end of each week, making it manageable if you start early) actually allows you to get in lots of practice (so you really understand the subject at a deep level) AND the support also comes from the fact that he will literally take so much time out of his week to not only give extensive office hours to those struggling, but to craft study guides for midterms and finals that really prepare you for the exams if you take the time to do it.

I could get an F or an A in this class, and it would not change the fact that I truly believe that Jukka is one of the few professors that actually care about your learning journey and your future. He reignited my passion for learning.

Highlights of this class:
* Jukka is approachable and he always welcomes you to ask questions in class.
* Jukka is the type of person to check in with you and tell you to not worry when you're stressed. (He actually cares about you as a person!)
* Jukka prepares his students by telling you the type of problems that can come up on the test by listing possibilities on an extensive study guide. (I kid you not: He literally gives you an organized study guide of what can come up on each of the final/midterm questions. He WILL NEVER give you a question that doesn't match the material you learned in class lectures, homework, or the study guides.)
* He gave us an extra credit opportunity to make up our midterm grades.

If you want to get an A then take this class. Jukka is extremely understanding. He has at least 3 office hours sessions weekly, and towards the end of the quarter it is usually around 5. He will often stay longer than planned, sometimes until 9 pm even on the weekends. If you attend these, you will know what will be on the quiz/exams. The class did bad on the 2nd midterm, and he gave an ONLINE makeup exam where you could earn 100% of the points you missed. If you were the only one that failed, (probably because you partied every night), he will have a 1 on 1 meeting on zoom with you. He curved everyone's grade in the end as much as possible without breaking department rules. So there is no excuse to fail, or if you put in effort, no excuse to not get an A.

However, it is not a "free" A. To do well, you need to attend office hours (at least once in a while). Be prepared to do 30-50 hw problems each week. That is pretty much it if you want to do well.

I wanted to respond to the comment made 12/15/23. First of all, yes, professors often give study guides. Does that downplay the amount of effort Jukka puts in? Do you hate the fact that he gave you those study guides? Not to mention the first and final study guides were almost complete replicas of the actual exam.

Second of all, Yes he doesn't check in with you when you are stressed. And yes, he also has 230 other kids in his class. Do your other profs check on you when you feel stressed? What are you trying to say? Also he had the ones who failed to have a 1 on 1 zoom meeting. What more is there to expect in a professor?

Third, yes we retook the 2nd midterm. You could score ALL of the points you missed back, in an online test. Why did everyone swarm him to curve the grade? Personally, I'm not sure. From my perspective, I was pretty prepared for the exam as he went over the difficult problems such as Rolle's Theorem like 5 times during office hours.

Finally, I agree that the lectures were not helpful. Many of the lectures were too confusing. He used many formulas and definitions that did not really help. I was usually on my phone waiting for the iclicker. This led to me relying solely on the office hours and hw solutions. So I see where you are coming from when you say his teaching methods are not it. Again though, you mention "no support existed". What support do you want? You could have talked about literally anything during office hours.

Overall, I agree that there are a good number of hw problems (30-50 per week), and that the lectures were not very helpful. I still think this was a great class though. Jukka is extremely understanding. He wants you to succeed. He prioritizes being fair (and often merciful) when giving quizzes and exams. He canceled 2-3 quizzes and drops the lowest assignment in every weight category. He curved the final grades as much as possible without violating school rules. There is no excuse to fail, and if you just put in some effort, there is no excuse not to get an A. The diction and tone used in the comment before made it seem as if they were salty about the grade they received. Lastly, I would say “good luck” but you don’t need it because you have Jukka.

IF YOU LOVE YOURSELF, RETAKE THE MATH DIAGONISTIC!!! Jukka is a REALLY nice professor, loves Rick and Morty, and is quirky, but do not let that fool you. I scored a 75 on the diagnostic, I didn't want to retake it. Biggest mistake of my life. Jukka assigns SO MANY HW problems! Maybe around 60-80 a week. He reads off a presentation in class, you have to go to office hours if you ever want to see how to actually do the math. He will give 'practice midterms' and claim they are 'harder' than the real deal, ALL LIES!!!! I just came back from taking the final, within the first 30 mins, a girl ran out CRYING. The final had me contemplating running out as well. The whole class's vibe was sad. I would rather take every single AP test in the nation than have to sit through that final again. All my friends in 31A have barely any homework, easy quizzes, and easy midterms. I am doing harder work, taking harder quizzes, and harder midterms, when I am supposed to be in a class that is supposed to support you. RETAKE THE DIAGNOSTIC. Biggest mistake of my academic career, as of right now. However, Jukka said he will curve the grades at the end. That will be the only reason why the whole class does not fail. Also, do not misplace my anger, I love Jukka, he is so fun to talk to, but the class was absolutely way harder than it needed to be. This did not feel like a support class for 31A, this was a much, much harder version. Do Not Take 31AL. Please.

You can't really understand his lectures, doesn't really do practice problems in class, just explains theories. Take 31A and not 31AL, they had way easier finals than this course which is supposed to be easier in a sense. He also wears a mask during lecture so its very difficult to understand him through it. There was also obnoxious post-class reflections that I found useless. Wouldn't recommend at all!

The MVP, the GOAT. Many words can be used to describe Juuka. This class was the best. He makes you feel secure and not stupid when you don't understand. His goal is to make sure everyone passes, and he does so very well. He reads the slides but then dives into each concept and tries to explain it in a way that all can understand. He is also very charismatic, which made the lecture enjoyable and never boring. If you need to take Calc 1, Juuka is your guy.

Okay, I know im bad at math but I studied and got help from plf tuturoing and outside of the classroom I understood the content. During class he over explains and makes it 10x more confusing. I talked to other people taking the same class and please take another teacher. His secound midterm was nothing like the practice or problems given and me and a bunch of kids told him and he said that we are crazy and that we could explain in essays on how its wrong and he might look over it. 100% dont take if you have the choice.

If there are Jukka fans I am one of them. If there is one Jukka fan I am them. If there are no Jukka fans I am dead. THIS MAN IS THE GOAT. Yes he gives homework and daily reviews but he only does that so you actually deeply understand the content and most is completion grade anyways. If you do everything he gives you, you don’t need to study and you’ll come out with such a thorough knowledge of calculus you’ll think you’re some sort of genius. Jukka is funny and engaging in lectures and SO. HELPFUL. He literally hosts office hours like every day and on the week of a midterm or final he hosts long review sessions where he goes over POSSIBLE QUESTIONS AND HOW TO SOLVE. He even hosts them on SUNDAYS. No need for God on Sundays you have Jukka. In all seriousness, he is a great teacher who clearly cares deeply about mathematics and the class. He will do what it takes for you to succeed. I would take this class 10x over again!

The way his grading scheme works is youll have a weekly quiz testing you on the material you learned the week before. Theres also a daily content review problem along with question asking you "what was the most important thing you learned today" which I would just write like 50 words and get full credits. Each week you will also recieve around a 30 problem assignment you must complete with 5% taken off each problem you get wrong (it opens an AI tutor up after you get the question wrong though which is super useful). It definitely is a bit of a workload but the weekly assignment is definitely doable if you dont leave it until last minute. There are also 2 midterms and 1 final which have questions that are basically the exact concepts he gives you on the study guides. As long as you understand the study guides you'll be completely fine. Our class median for the 1st midterm was a 91.2% and 2nd was 89%. As for his lectures, he uses iclicker to take attendance for a participation grade. For some context I had never taken a calculus class, so I found his in class teaching difficult to understand and I would end up reteaching it to myself or having the AI tutor guide me through it on the homework. He doesnt solve too many problems each lesson which is what helps me understand the conept, however, he goes into depth of the conceptual understanding. I believe he is a very fair grader and you get out of it as much effort as you put into it! Jukka definitely cares about his students so if you are struggling in the class he will make office hours to speak one-on-one. He would also often push back the due dates for weekly assignments, in the situations his office hour videos (where he solves the difficult problems from the weekly homework) didnt upload at an adequate time.

This is one of the best professors for the 31 series at UCLA. This class consistently performed better on midterms than the other regular 31A classes due to Jukka's incredible preparation materials and clear expectations. He cares about you, the class, and how people are understanding the material that he teaches. If you placed into this class with the diagnostic, it is well worth it to stick to this class even with the extra hour of lab time per week. That all being said, the workload is a fair amount and some concepts will be harder to understand than others, especially if you do not have a background in calc from high school. Even so, his midterms and final exams went well because he allows notecards and provides practice exams that are super similar to the actual exam. Overall, Jukka is a great professor and I would highly recommend not retaking the math diagnostic if he is the teacher for 31AL.

I am naturally not the best at math, and having taken my first calculus class at UCLA was definitely a challenge. That being said, Professor Jukka was the best person to teach it.

Don't be scared with the workload, that truly is the way to learn. He is the funniest professor I've had so far, and genuinely cares that his students learn and actually understand.

I do strongly encourage that you go to office hours, because that's where you can ask all your questions.

If he is offered as a professor, choose his class!!!!
