This class is not very difficult for an introductory tax course since the course reader ($82) basically covers the entire material reflected in the exams. The textbook is helpful if anything during lecture was unclear, but the homework isn’t really reflective of the exams so I’d do it as a last resort. With that said, the concepts alone may not be very difficult to memorize, but they can get pretty complicated when they’re intertwined into one question, especially when there are phase outs involved. Do not expect practice exams. She will simply give you a single sheet of paper to show you the format of the exam. The assignments which each consist of 5% of your grade (20% for 4 assignments total) are also not helpful for the exams, but solidify the concepts discussed during any previous lectures. Make sure you do them correctly though because she will take points off for any little thing!! Read the instructions correctly and try looking the solution up online if you’re unsure of your answer. I found that the solutions online are outdated given the tax law changes but are similar enough to make sure you’re on the right track.
The final was WAY harder than the midterm..Due to the present circumstances, we had to do the final remotely online which was fine because we had multiple choice questions on the midterm anyway. Anyways, the final was on CCLE and she made it so we couldn’t go back and revise any of our answers which was EXTREMELY frustrating because I would remember halfways through the exam how to answer a question that I guessed on, but obviously couldn’t go back..Oh and she didnt even bother to mention how many questions were on the final so how the heck were we suppose to pace ourselves??? I wasn’t sure if I was going too slow or if I had time! Hopefully she changes this policy for those taking her next quarter also online. To put it into perspective, I was one of the 13 people who got between As and Bs prior to the final and failed the final <50%. Gardner is funny and an amazing lecturer, but don’t take her exams for granted.

Highly recommend this class. Gardner is a very clear and engaging professor who provides real-world examples and great investment and career advice. She can be a bit repetitive but that's how she makes the material stick. This is one of the few classes where you will actually remember the material after completing the course.

I recommend doing all the assigned textbook problems in addition to reviewing the course reader to prepare for exams. The course reader lays down the key concepts you need to know for the exams and the textbook questions are good practice. Don't stress about the tax returns she makes you do - they're a small fraction of your grade and aren't correlated with exam questions. I got below 60% on two of them and still got an A in the class.

I missed my opportunity to give professor gardner a good review during the instructor evaluation period, so I will do so here. Mgmt 127a is the third class I have taken with professor gardner, and I can say without a doubt that she is my favorite professor at UCLA. She teaches in a clear, thorough, and succinct way that simplifies complicated topics. Her lectures are never dry (even though she teaches accounting!), and she always has fun stories and a lot of energy during lecture which probably explain why her classes are always well attended. Although her classes can be challenging because she is so thorough, it's never impossible to do well if you are willing to put in the work, do practice problems, and have a broad understanding of each concept she covers. I wish that I could take every accounting class with professor gardner, because if I could, I would.

Professor Gardner was a wonderful professor. This class was asynchronous with pre-recorded lectures and she provided the course materials in the form of PDFs for students to follow through with her videos. Usually, it would be in the form of a course reader. She thoroughly explains the topics and emphasizes the basic concepts repeatedly, which I personally liked. The homework problems are optional, but I found them helpful for preparing for the exams. The class also includes 2 written assignments worth 10% of your grade. One thing I especially liked about this class was that she gave midterm corrections. Students could redeem up to 15 points back on their midterm by redoing 3 questions that were on the exam. I found this to be helpful in learning from my mistakes. Overall, a great class.

I really enjoyed taking this class with Gardner. All of her lectures were pre-recorded and uploaded onto CCLE each week. There isn't as much material to cover compared to MGMT 120A/B so the workload is relatively light. She walks you through pages of her course reader (which you don't have to buy since she uploads PDFs) super clearly and will repeat overall concepts to make sure you understand what's going on. Overall, gives a lot of examples so the class is pretty straightforward. If you take good notes and do the practice problems, you should do fine. For my quarter, she let us do midterm corrections so you could get up to 16 points back, and the class was also slightly curved even though she didn't mention it on her syllabus.

I love Gardner honestly. She is one of the best accounting professors at UCLA. I took 127A with her because I loved her in 1A. Make sure you know the course reader reallyyyy well. For the midterm, I memorized the course reader and tried the practice questions the night before and ended up not being able to answer any of those questions right. Almost cried thinking that I was going to mess up the test. But the midterm made me realize all I had to do was memorize the course reader because she has put everything she wants us to know in that. So for the final I literally memorized the course reader and didn't bother with the textbook questions at all and aced the test (scored the highest). I messed up and got an A- because I didn't pay attention to the due date for the 5% assignment and ended up not turning anything in - so please don't forget to turn in assignments!

Gardner was one of the best professors I've had at UCLA. I found her lectures very clear and specific. Tax law is really in depth, but I felt that Gardner really went over all of the details and made it clear during the lectures. You definitely have to go to and pay attention during the lectures - there's a lot of information that comes out of each sentence. Her lectures are good, so if you can do that, you'll understand it and do well. If you don't like to go to class, you won't do well. Again, very specific, but thats the nature of the beast, and she has her own accounting firm so she has a lot of real world experience. I like how she relates everything to the real world and knows what she's talking about. She's more than happy to help with any students that reach out to her. I absolutely recommend taking 120A with gardner - best intro I could've had to tax.
