I took Gardner for 1A as well and think she is the best professor I have taken so far at UCLA. She really wants to help her students and always invites us to come to her office hours for content help and career planning help. Her class consists of two grades: 50% midterm and 50% final. This seems daunting, however she curved the midterm so an 80 was an A-/A. You definitely have to work harder to understand these concepts than you did in 1A and make sure you have a good foundation from 1A because a lot of 1B builds off of it. She also gave us 3% extra credit for filling out the course evaluation. The first midterm was all free response which was nice because I got a lot of partial credit and then the final was all multiple choice (no partial credit) which was definitely harder. You definitely have to study hard to do well but her exams are VERY VERY similar to the course reader that you go over in class. I also recommend using the textbook problems she assigns as practice for the exams.
This class is quite high pressure as the exam distributions are 50% midterm and 50% final, but that does mean that there is no busy work. The tests are fairly hard however even if you study.
I think overall this class was great. Professor Gardner has fantastic notes and clear lectures. While I know the tests can be difficult, it is an accounting class and that is to be expected. She makes the tests fair and all of the material is pulled directly from her lecture notes. If you like having homework to act as buffer for your grade, this class does not have that. Your grade is based off of your midterm and final grade which I personally loved because it meant it was easy to keep up with the workload. She also is happy to connect you with future networking/job opportunities and talks about some of the job options available in the accounting field which is super helpful!
I enjoyed taking this class. Professor Gardner is very engaging and gives her students all the tools needed to be successful. While the class was only 50% midterm 50% final and had challenging tests, she gave a generous curve.
I had Gardner for 1B. Although she is not as easy as Woo, she is very fair in her grading; the material on her exams is exactly the notes that are take during lecture and our class received pretty generous exam curves. There was only a midterm and a final. This meant that for much of the quarter, you did not have to worry about her class but it also meant your entire grade was 50% midterm, 50% final. Gardner does a great job at actually teaching the material, although she may be a little more difficult. Its a trade-off.
If you dedicate yourself to understanding the course material on a weekly basis, you are sure to do well on the exams. There is no graded homework, there is only a midterm and final that encompass the entirety of the grade. Therefore, it is crucial to attend all lectures and at least attempt some of the homework problems in order to ensure you are prepared for the exams. The exams are not easy, but if you understand everything in the lecture notes (not so much the textbook) you are guaranteed to do well.
Unlike MGMT 1A with Gardner, her MGMT 1B has zero assignments to complete, which is a massive W in my book. Gardner is also still an engaging and energized lecturer, with plenty of funny stories to tell about different businesses. However, having no assignments means that the midterm and final are the only grades in the class (because discussion sections are just for extra practice), so you better study if you wanna do well. The first half of the class is about financial accounting for long-term liabilities and equity accounts while the second half is an intro to managerial accounting. The second half is definitely harder because the content is a bit more unfamiliar and complex. Plus, Gardner threw us a curveball on the final by making it both a 50-question multiple-choice test AND having us write out all of our work to find the answer like on her other exams. However, if you do really study her notes and lecture videos, you'll be well prepared for the exams and future accounting classes, which I'd say is pretty cool.
