She is kind but a really boring lecturer. The textbooks are cheap because it’s shakespeare but you do need to have read the material. Otherwise it’s so easy to get behind. Her tests are HARD so make sure you try to get into office hours early to find out exactly what she wants. Shes very specific and grades like that. She will work with you as you try to improve but this isn’t a class or Professor you want to take for an easy A.
I took Professor Cunningham's 110T course in Spring 2014. She was extremely helpful and clear in explaining and illustrating what students needed to understand in order to improve their reading and writing skills.
This is not just a composition class, but rather one that focuses on different forms of writing for your literature papers. If you come out doing well in her class - know that you have the tools to do well in other classes as well (you might just have to talk to professors or T.A.'s about their individual expectations for papers - especially if it is a subject in a different discipline other than English). But, she gives you all of the tools, and it is for you to implement them.
I suggest you bring a laptop to class because you will want the information she provides you with in the future.
She breaks up the class into sections covering poetry, criticism, research, the novel, and theater writing, and more.
Take the class seriously. I would look up the text you will be reading and read it ahead of time during your break or make sure that you make a plan to read that work throughout the quarter. She assigned other things to read alongside this main work, and so it's best not to read it towards the end (which is what many in my class did).
She never went on tangents nor did she ever waste class-time. Only once, she set a few minutes aside to talk about the USB shootings - but I did not find this inappropriate. I am not a robot and it was on everyone's mind.
She is an understanding and caring person, but she is also honest. I appreciated her concise criticism on my papers. I could tell she really wanted us to grow as literature students - which was the whole point of my taking her class.
If you are a transfer student, I definitely recommend you take her class before committing to any literature classes. She's wonderful.
I took English 110T with Professor Cunningham and it was a bit of a disappointment by the end when we had to submit a portfolio and a final paper on Twelfth Night by Shakespeare. I kept waiting to discover some aspect about my writing that could help me for future quarters at UCLA. All I learned was that there isn't a formula to writing an essay, it all depends on yourself and what you consider interesting because that's the only way the paper you write is going to sound interesting. Professor Cunningham was excellent at providing us with different ways to approach a text, even though all we really needed was the book and not necessarily the class. She has a warm personality, but she spends a lot of the time just talking about the exciting things she did over the weekend. If this type of small talk appeals to you, than by all means spend your money on it. If you want a professor that is serious about making use of class time instead of gushing about all the years they've spent studying Shakespeare, than I suggest looking for another professor. She is approachable in office hours even though her desire to talk to you on a personal level can seem a little invasive. The class was helpful as a basic introduction to writing about different genres in literature.
