I thought this class was amazing. One of the best I took at UCLA. Don’t let any of the negative or neutral reviews scare you. This Professor is very helpful and has office hours. There are two exams, two papers (short), and one group project. If you have any questions she doesn’t go over in class she is more than happy to assist you and wants you to do well!
Take amazing notes, all will be on the test. No podcast, but allowed students to record audio to use as a study tool. The slides are extremely helpful. This class as fair, do the readings (they are short ), show up to each class, take great notes, review the notes and slides regularly. If you set aside a couple of hours each week to do this you should do fine imo, but do to the nature of the material I’d try to review them everyday until they’re familiar. The papers are based on following the prompt using information from material and your own thoughts. Our papers were only 2 pages long double spaced. For the group project it seemed most did a 5 page paper, but there are other options available. Overall great class and engaging lectures. The content was really really interesting. For anyone saying the course title of this class is misleading clearly misunderstood the definition of rhetoric. This class literally studies rhetoric of pop culture. Only a small portion, about 10% is theory, but that theory is what you will use to study the rhetoric of pop culture. This class will teach you to become a critical thinker, think analytically, critique, and avoid being brainwashed by consumer marketing and the media. If you already have these skills it’ll sharpen it and increase your comprehension. Great class, take it. If I would’ve taken my own advice for the the midterm I probably would’ve gotten an A instead of an minus A- . Make sure you give a strong midterm and you should have a smooth time in the class. There will be no surprises on the midterm or final. Just make sure you’re ready. This is the only review you’ll need.
I absolutely loved Rhetoric of Pop Culture with Kicenski. She has her own way of approaching the topic and truly helps you re-evaluate somethings that truly do have such an impact in daily life. Anyways, I recommend this class if you want to learn but have it enjoyable so that it's not breaking your back nor too easy. For the essays though, make sure to check with her because she really has her own style.
I took Comm 110 with her, and I loved it.
It was an amazing experience to be able to explore the concepts of gender and communications, and her assignments were not a heavy workload at all, but still managed to get across some big ideas.
She teaches 110 but it wasn't available in the drop down. (Gender & Communication)
The class is interesting as is the reading. Her powerpoint are clear and she will give out a comprehensive study guide. The tests are surprisingly difficult... Many scored lower on the midterm than they expected. Digging deeper into the concepts and definitions is necessary to get an A. Also knowing application of what is taught, is required on the exams.
Nice teacher.
I'm not sure what the previous ratings are from, but her speech class is AWESOME. I was originally enrolled in Comm 1 with Miller because of the reviews, but I switched after realizing there was no way I could sit through 2 hours of nonsense. (Miller is really sweet, but when you go around a class of 50+ and ask each person their opinion on the same subject, everyone repeats each other and it is just terrible.)
Professor K has made speech relatively painless and actually pretty fun and interesting. She is a sweet woman with a kind, warm demeanor and voice.
Plus, her assignments are VERY reasonable and relevant and she doesn't try to cram a bunch of nonsense into the quarter.
DO NOT CHOOSE KARYL as your Public Speaking professor. She has a midterm that is heavily weighed but does not prep you enough for it, and it is pointless to public speaking. Her group assignment makes you share a grade, so if the other person sucked, it too is your fault. She gives you a final grade she feels you deserve not one you earned. I am an excellent public speaker my speeches wow'ed the crowd every time. I wasn't the only one who was pretty good at public speaking, but still I left Comm 1 with a freaking B.
Bridgewater is your guy!!
I definitely recommend this class!!
Strengths: Professor really does do a great job of engaging with her students and allowing the discussions take a natural flow. I was very comfortable seeking help, and I always felt that my input was welcome. I felt that I learned material that is very applicable outside of the course.
Weaknesses: The course material was great, but the grading for the essays and tests was pretty tough. Not as easy as you may think!
Going into this class, I did not know what to expect. Now that I finished the quarter and looking back to the material, it was interesting content. Throughout the quarter I regretted many times for taking her class, cause the content was so abstract and difficult. However, the stress was worth it in the end, cause she is really good with her materials and is willing to help. Although she did ruin my 4.0 GPA, I don't really care cause she was really helpful. I ended up with an A-...... I'm happy about it though.
Professor K is one of my favorite professors at UCLA. I took her gender class last quarter and loved it (and her) so much that I signed up for this class specifically because she was teaching it. I wasn't disappointed- Professor K was just as insightful and engaging for this class as she was in her gender class. Even though the material can be dense and sometimes dry, Professor K does a wonderful job of explaining it and making it more interesting, exciting, and relevant. She's also great at facilitating class discussions- even if you're not one to participate in them, you'll learn a lot from your peers. The midterm and final are all multiple choice and straightforward so long as you've gone to class and done the readings, and the papers are short and manageable as well. If you have to choose between this and her gender class, I'd definitely recommend the gender one, but this is still a pretty good option, if only because Professor K. is such an amazing professor!
Professor K was awesome. I loved going to her class! The only complain I had was her tests were ridiculously difficult. She’s one of those teachers that makes really tricky questions and its either you know it or you dont. Honestly I dont even know how I got a B- in her class. I loved her but I would not take her again, just the thought of taking her tests scare me. Everything else was super easy though, two essays, two discussion board questions, and one group presentation. She also randomly takes roll in class by telling you to get in a group and turn something in, so if you dont go to class, I do not recommend this class. Gives extra credit and curves exams.
