I had Stolzenbach for CEE 153. I found the class really straightforward, since he gave us handwritten homework problems, and the tests were similar to those practice problems. At least he’s not like other professors who just assign you book problems, that are bound to have a disconnect with what’s being tested. But having said that, homework problems are going to be hard and it will take a few hours to do it, but once you are able to reason around it and figure out your personal approach, you’ll be able to know how to do it later on a test.
As for his lecturing, he is very knowledgeable about what he teaches, but being old, he does have a monotone, and can put you to sleep. My approach was to read the textbook before class, and then go to lecture. I noticed his lectures could sometimes be very technical, so I liked the book because it did a better job of explaining things. But you can really do whatever approach you liked. I knew people that would come to every lecture and not pick up the book once, and others that read the book, and never showed up to lecture.
Definitely one of the easier civil engineering courses. Some of the topics are fairly difficult however exam problems are very similar to homework. He always provides example homework sets with solutions so there shouldn't be any difficulty completing any assignment or doing well in exams. He is also very generous with sheet sheets so you definitely have more than enough room for all your formulas. I recommend going over past exams and being familiar with homework problem procedures to do well overall in the class.
The material is not hard. But half of the class showed up in lecture and 3/4 of that fell asleep (I know i did). I can't say I learned much from the course (means from him). I took Cee 110 also, and it wasn't useful as well in term of learning new material. He's generous in grading tho, which is a huge plus.
