I really enjoyed this class. I learned a lot about Labor Laws that I never knew about that will help me tremendously in my career. There were so many amazing lectures by so many notable speakers. I felt really special getting to hear from everyone. I will say my two pieces of constructive feedback for this class was the how little the final examination was gone over. The other would be having to go to labor events outside of class for five hours. I had trouble fitting the five hours into my schedule because most of the events never landed on a time I could do them, since I am currently taking 21 units and working at 2 studios in downtown LA. Perhaps instead of five hours, four hours might be a bit more doable. I had trouble getting that final hour in. And in terms of the final examination, I simply did not know what to do to study. I thought the papers were good because I found a topic I was passionate about and was able to write ten pages about it. The reflection paper was also a really doable three pages. You do read three simple to understand 80 page-books in this class that are mostly written by the professors describing labor corruption. They have pictures. You also read articles, but none of it is mandatory. Even lecture isn't. But I recommend you go so you understand the concepts better. This class did have a collective-bargaining exercise that was my favorite activity in the class. Basically, you pretend you're either the employers or the workers and you debate your case for different topics like higher vs lower wages. Overall, I learned a lot about the struggles of much of the working class. This class opened my eyes to a lot of corruption that goes on in the world, and gave me inspiration to protect myself and my family as well as others. I would definitely recommend this class to a friend. I had a great time.

This was an easy GE to take, all you have to do is 5 hours of community service and a 10 page paper that involves any injustice but the good thing is that you have the beginning of the quarter towards the end . The discussion sections are short. However the only thing I didn't like about this class is that the professor would just talk the entire time and have no in class inclusivity, so it got boring really quick.

If you're looking for an easy GE, this is the class! I took this class Winter 2020 and it wasn't too bad. There are readings you have to do, but you can always just skim through them to get the main points. You discuss the readings, but not in depth so it's easy. There are papers for this class, but there are no tests.

Took online. Minimal readings and long lectures that you can get away with not attending because your grade is based on work you do in discussion section. The lecture presentations are interesting though. Your grade is 33% Field Hours and Reflection, 33% a Research Paper (10 pgs, TA holds your hand through it), 33% participation in discussion. Super easy class and a good introduction to Labor Studies.

If you're considering this class as a GE, TAKE IT!! It's super easy and there are just two papers due at the end of the quarter. No midterm or final exams!

like someone else said kent wong actually did more of the lectures in the class so im gonna leave the review here lol. overall i'm really happy that i took this class. it definitely, definitely got me more interested and involved in the labor movement and now i'm much more critical of worker rights and labor laws. with that being said, this class was also one big question mark lmao. we went through so many different topics and histories but it was never made clear which concepts within those topics were most important / what we should know. lectures were consistently DRAGGED out for the whole 2 hours it was so hard to pay attention. BUT i loved doing the 5 hours of field study because i really got to immerse myself in activism and organizing. the 10-12 pg research paper we had got reduced to 8-10 pgs but i was still in unimaginable pain writing it. thank god for having the BEST TA Lena (Siyue Wang) who was funny, chill (applies to how she graded the paper too), and extremely helpful when it came to the final. she gave us 50 "helpful suggestions" as she glazed through all 50 of the final questions...this was sooo key i am seriously so grateful she did that omg. if shes TAing again make sure to enroll with her <3

Since Wong does most of the lecturing in this class (as opposed to Valenzuela), I will review him. He's a bit boring, but he still seems very friendly and willing. He doesn't use slides or lecture notes, but just talks (and talks, and talks...), which is annoying because you can't really take good notes that way. The class was super easy, though. I didn't do the weekly readings (read 2/3 books though), and the final was still super easy. Easy A. Low commitment! Thanks Siyue (she's a great TA)!
