tl;dr: take this class.

Want a good grade? Take this class. There's a midterm (Week 5) and final exam (Week 10) that are INCREDIBLY easy if you go to lecture and even lightly skim the textbook. They are non-cumulative (55 points each), and not designed to trick you. On top of that, there's a book response paper, but you literally have to read like a 150-page book outside of class, write a 2-sentence summary about each chapter, and it's a free 30 points.

Want a helpful and compassionate professor? Take this class. Kim went through the corporate world, made a ton of money, and left to teach what she does now because she's so passionate about it and teaching students about it. She's literally only here because she wants to be here to help students learn, and that is so crazy rare. She wants you to succeed. It's that simple.

Worried about too much PC rhetoric? Take this class. I'm a straight white man who is semi-conservative but open-minded, and it was literally totally fine. Obviously, there are some terms and stuff you'll have to learn if you're not familiar with them. On the whole, however, the class is really about how gender impacts everyday life (sex in the workplace, communication between genders, etc.). It's not just an attack on men like you may expect (I kind of did). Kim has an agenda, but doesn't try to hide it and always presents multiple sides of an issue.

Really, the only reason I would recommend not taking this class is if you don't plan on attending lectures. She posts slides, but they don't have all the information you need; however, if you go to lecture, you can pick it all up pretty easily, and if you miss a lecture, you can just go to her office hours once and she'll tell you everything you need to know.

That's it. Take this class.

I love love love Professor Elsesser and this class! This is a super easy psych elective that covers super relevant, interesting material! Her tests are all multiple choice and you have one short reading response to her book. The tests do include material from the books so make sure you read. Elsesser makes the material funny and really engaging, as well as being an inspirational person!

I enjoyed this class. Prof. Elsesser was very clear. Her tests were reasonable and were mainly based on lecture. I got an A, but I took good notes and read the book. If you don't pay attention in lecture, I would definitely recommend reading the book thoroughly as most of what she teaches is in the book.

I recommend this class! At first, I did not like this class as I was learning something beyond of what I could accept (e.g., different categories of gender and sex etc.) However, I began to understand a different point of views in reality; the materials are freaking interesting! I am so happy that I could take this class with Prof. Elsesser. If you work hard and enjoy reading the textbook (Again, the textbook is well-written!), then you will get A.

This class was interesting and super applicable to life. Just a midterm, a final, and a short paper to check that you'd read a book. The textbook was pricey and then you have to buy two other books. But definitely worth it. The tests were harder than i thought, but despite getting Bs on both, I got an A- in the class.

I was literally one point away from getting an A- in the class which was pretty frustrating, but hey, that’s my fault lol. Honestly, a super easy class. The tests are super straightforward, no surprises. Everyone usually finishes in about 45 min and there’s 55 questions. The paper is also a breeze. It’s a book report, essentially. As long as it looks like you read the assigned book and put effort into the quality of the paper, you will get full credit. A great class, I learned a lot.

So so I'm gonna be honest...
I am not one of these students that doesn't care to work hard and will come on here after doing bad in the class and give a shit review.
I don't have my grade back yet but I feel like I will have a high B...and I'm annoyed about it only because from looking at the reviews prior to enrolling people said this was an "easy" class.
Ladies and Gents, it is NOT.
First off, you need to be down to read. And I don't mean skim thru the text right before the exam I mean she breaks it down where 11> of the qs on the midterm and final (although not cumulative) come right from the text and don't over lap with lecture. There are a couple books, supposedly "for fun" story type books about gender that you will need to read and be tested on/right a mini book report on. but idk I just wanted to learn about psych in gender and I couldn't enjoy myself because the readings were irritating.
I wouldn't say she SUCKS as a lecture, but it helps if you are really into the material otherwise it can get super boring like half way you wanna die because the room is freezing, your uninterested and she's really monotone.
All in all coming into it I thought it was gonna be an interesting easy A class for my psych electives that I won't need to worry about while taking Psych 100B.. HA my ass..
Be prepared to put a fair amount of time in, and if you show up and care maybe learn a thing or two about how society stinks.

Dr. Kim Elsesser is wonderful and at times, funny. This class was a joy to take; I looked forward to going to class every week. She gives clear and engaging lectures that are informative and well-organized. I really liked how she incorporated relevant modern news/events to the material went over in class at the beginning of every lecture.

The class consisted of two exams, non-cumulative that was based on mostly the lecture and textbook. There were a few questions based on a research article as well as a film for each exam, but they were really simple and easy. In fact, Kim tells you what question will be asked for the research article, and as long as you watched the film, you should generally get the question asked about it right. We also had to do a book response, but it was super simple and basically free points as long as you read the book.

Make sure you read the textbook and the required book, or at the very least, skim them. As long as you do, you shouldn't worry about the exams. I just took the final today after not studying and just briefly going over my notes that I took from lecture and on the textbook and the exam was super easy.

I never went to office hours but she seemed really approachable and encouraging. I highly recommend this class if you're interested in the subject and/or you want a relatively light class.
