The class I took with Kim is not listed, but I took their ENGL 168 — Major American Writers class and it was amazing. At first, I was worried this class would be bland and we would only read books from authors that are typically thought of as "Major American Writers," but the course materials were all amazing pieces that I wanted to completely finish without skimming. Kim's lectures are always a joy to attend and they make everyone feel welcome. The class is mainly discussion-based which may seem intimidating at first, but Professor Calder always offers an opinion on the materials, asks thought-provoking questions, and keeps the class engaged. While the syllabus looks intimidating at first, I promise you that taking a class with them is worth it! There were two papers in the class which were worth 20% and 45% of the grade, but we were allowed to break out of the traditional humanities paper and do some creative writing in them while also doing critical analysis. They were also very understanding with the situation we are in with COVID and they were willing to help out in any way they could. Honestly, this was the best class I took at UCLA and Kim is my favorite professor. Take their class and you won't be sorry!
