I think I have to preface this by saying that a lot of my struggle came from my poor studying habits. I got destroyed by the second midterm but did well on the first midterm + final so ended with an A-. Prof Boswell seems like a very genuine person who wants to help you learn, and a pretty cool person overall. However, I didn't love/mesh with her lecture style much -- she wasn't the most engaging in my opinion and I found myself dozing off quite a bit (for comparison I love Surro's lecture style and format). Also Boswell always had the coolest drip so I have to respect her for that.
Professor Boswell is the best professor!! Her lectures are super clear and she always relates the material to relevant situations within the economy. She is super helpful and answers any questions/concerns in office hours. I would highly recommend attending Professor Boswell's office hours. The class consists of group homeworks, 2 midterms, and a final. If you can definitely take a class with her!
A really understanding and caring professor that presents in a clear manner (really good slides for people who find themselves skipping class often).
She always tried to find relevant material for the students, often talking about things happening in the present, and a lot of the group work also dealt with actualities.
Manageable exams if you study on time.
Overall, a great and very kind professor would take again 100%!
Honestly the material is not too bad to learn. I joined the class late and went to lecture once the entire entire quarter and ended the class with an A+. To learn the material I just read the textbook and reviewed her slides. Her teaching was whatever, I didnt really go to class so I wouldnt know.
If you want an A in her class review ALL the midterms, final, tests she gives you. I learned and studied the material in the 3-4 days leading up to an exam and did well. Seriously, if you can comfortably get an A on her previous tests you will get an A on the midterms/final.
She curved the class this quarter because everyone did really bad on the final. And yes, even after reviewing every single exam she gave the final had so many questions that I felt she didnt cover or just brushed over in her slides.
The class was online with multiple choice, open book/note midterms and final so it was an easy class, however the professor was a bad lecturer and I feel like I didn't learn much at all in this class. Her lectures were all over the place, and sometimes she would repeat herself, or forget what she was talking about, or contradict herself in the next sentence. When watching the lecture recordings, I would often play it back multiple times since it was just super confusing to understand her overall point.
Easy A, but you barely learn anything and her lectures are boring, bad, and frustrating.
The grade for this class consists of 30% projects (3 projects in total), 30% midterm, which was Wednesday of week 6, and 40% cumulative final. You are allowed 3 double-sided cheat sheets for the midterm and 4 double-sided cheat sheets for the final. I took 103 with Rojas and would definitely recommend taking this class with Boswell if you can. Her exams are much more representative of what she teaches in class, and she gives you lots of study material to help you out. She also records lectures and does Zoom as well. My TA Gladys Teng was great and super helpful as well when it came to helping us understand the material and with project-related questions. The exams are all multiple choice, and there was no time crunch in my opinion, so you have time. She tends to make a lot of them more conceptual, so you really have to understand the definitions and concepts to know how to answer these, which are difficult sometimes. You do not need to memorize any R code for this class. You may need to know how to read certain R-code outputs, but very rarely, and it is usually just looking at a p-value, R-squared value, etc. in an output, nothing difficult. She will also give you a list of what you need to know for exams ahead of time. I found it helpful to do the practice exams and iClicker questions many times and make sure that my cheat sheet had all the information on it that she said would be on the exam. The projects can be time-consuming, but they seemed to be graded very leniently, with the average being in the upper A range, so these help your grade out if you do well. There is optional outside homework, but I did not find it helpful, so I stopped doing it. Overall, I would recommend this class with Boswell.
I love Professor Boswell. She genuinely really cares about her students, and is such a lovely person. I went to her office hours, adn even if you didn't have questions you could talk, and she would twist the conversation into something economic. The class was boring, but you can't expect much from a Pre-Req, I also dropped the major so it just wasn't for me in general. I recommend Boswell over other econ professors I have had though. She is fair, funny, and go to office hours you wont regret it!
