By far the best professor I ever had. he is great at teaching, brilliant, and very engaging. He holds office hours where he essentially does homework problems that students ask about, and he has dozen of practices problem for each prelim and the final. Definitely take him!
Dr. Enakoutsa is fantastic both his lectures and discussions are useful. The pacing of the class could have been a little better though--it was slow at the beginning, then picked up near the end, and then crammed a lot of topics (basically the last two chapters) into the last two weeks. That meant a brutal workload near the end since the topics/problems were not only more involved and took long, but there were more problems as well. There's usually around 20 problems straight from the Rogawski Calculus textbook every week and discussions/lectures are not mandatory attendance. Those 20 problems take around 6-8 hours to do which is extremely fair since that's only about an hour of work a day. The hardest part of the class are the quizzes, but he usually does best out of two so a low quiz grade won't hurt you that much. There are two midterms and a final, all are 24 hours long and open note. I liked the way Dr. Enakoutsa taught this course and I'd definitely take another course with this professor if it were taught like this.
My experience in Professor Koffi's class has been quite disappointing and frustrating. The topics covered were needlessly complex and convoluted methods/proofs and HW load is ridiculous.
The testing format added further stress with the first test being 50 minutes of tough questions, leaving little time to think critically.
However, the second midterm was slightly more reasonable in difficulty.
The final was completely comprehensive on all of the chapters, with no formula sheet as we received in the 2nd midterm, and the last topic was covered 2 days before the final. I hope that in the future, Professor Koffi will take student feedback seriously instead of writing fake reviews for himself
-The quality of the posted notes added to the struggle as they were disorganized, messy, and often illegible.
-Although I understand this isn't his fault, Professor Koffi's thick accent proved to be a significant barrier.
I don't really agree with a lot of the ratings here. Koffi is a better professor than what these reviews might show you. Though he might not have been the most coherent sometimes, he was incredibly helpful, provided a lot of other learning resources, and gave fair tests. He was really accommodating of the online learning aspect and made all tests 24 hours. While his tests were pretty long and annoying, I felt that relative to a lot of 31B tests I've seen, the questions were slightly more straightforward. Seeing previous professors' questions, I would rather have taken Koffi's longer, easier questions over their hard ones. He might have purposely made these tests long because it was 24 hours, so I don't know how it will play out in a covid-free time.
He did give a LOT of homework and that was really annoying(Maybe 7 hours on a good week). The homework Psets were good practice since some questions were harder than the material on the tests, but it can get annoying when you're studying for other classes and you have to submit like 40 sums in 4 days. He tolerated tardiness and allowed late submissions though, so kudos to him there. Also, he just generally loves fostering learning and cares about feedback. He opened a discussion forum for all of us to ask doubts/discuss math and he was really open to listening to suggestions for improvement.
I think how he paced this class was a little weird because he spent a little more time on the introductory content and then kinda rushed through the final week, but this was also his first quarter too and I'm sure in the future he will get well adjusted to the pace of the system.
Overall, I think if you have a strong math background, you will breeze past this class regardless of your professor. This was the easiest class for me this quarter because I did a lot of this stuff in High school/over the summer, so I didn't sweat a lot for this class. However, if you do get the opportunity to take Koffi, do go ahead. He's incredibly resourceful and just generally a nice guy. Would take again
Professor Enakoutsa is a great teacher, and I think his personality made him stand out. He allowed as many questions as needed and held lots of office hours and reviews. He was lenient when he could be and if the entire class did poorly on something, he would adjust its weighting. I felt comfortable asking for help and if I was falling behind, he was willing to accommodate. His homeworks are long but I feel like they helped me understand the material. The calc textbook for this class is really good because it highlights the most important theorems and ideas, which made studying more efficient. Quizzes were sometimes tricky, but they were not worth very much and tests were not meant to take the full 24 hours (as the tests in some other math classes do). Highly recommend taking 32B with this professor because I learned a lot, I learned it efficiently, and I felt like the professor really helped me succeed.
Koffi is very clever and his lectures reflect it. He profoundly care about his students success. You can tell from several review sessions he organized at the end of the quarter. He has an accent, but his lecture are very well organized. He used for most of the time examples problems from the textbook. He assigned a lot of homework which can be annoying, but at the end I survived them by changing my time management. He is new to UCLA and have a lot of room to grow as strong instructor at UCLA. He is solid choice for calculus.
Professor Enakoutsa is truly outstanding. His knowledge and passion for his subject matter are evident in his lectures, which are engaging and thought-provoking. He has a genuine interest in his students' success and goes above and beyond to ensure they understand the material. Professor Enakoutsa's dedication to his field is inspiring and makes him an asset to any academic institution. I highly recommend taking a course with him.
UPDATE: dont take enakoutsa if you have any better option.
I thought enakoutsa was a great prof so i decided to take 33b with him as well.... that was a terrible choice. this quarter was far worse. his teaching is extrememly unclear, and if you don't self study you're screwed. that being said, he does geniunely care about his students-- he has daily office hours the days before the final, holds extra review sessions before midterms/finals, and is willing to explain small concepts to you in the middle of lecture if ur confused (which tbh can be kinda annoying when someone asks a million questions and interrupts someone else).
oh also he assigns a lot of hw- 11 homework assignments (including finals week), with on average 25 questions. His midterms/final are very fair though, quizzes can have challenging questions (they're conceptual), but the questions were fair, its not like it was written to punish you. also quizzes are weighted like 10% of your entire grade so its nbd if you miss a couple questions
original review:
Enakoutsa is a decent prof. Probably not my first choice but not a bad choice regardless.
He is very fair on exams: exam questoins are similar to what he teaches in class and often have easy numbers (no super weird numbers) and are decently quick to solve. You could def do a online midterm in like 90 min, and the final in 3 hrs. There are 2 exams + a final
Quizzes: 30 min timed, questions harder than exams but they are weighted very little (quizzes make up 10% of your exam grade and your exam grade is 25% of your final grade iirc)
He is super tough on HW: he assigns a lot of HW (like 10-15+ hrs a week). He grades some questions for accuracy and the rest for completion. HW grading is super generous though (likewise for exams, but not quizzes- quizzes were MC)
Also he doesn't give A+s which is annoying but not too bad
pros:
He has a thicc french accent (tbh its nice to hear, overall this is a pro)
cons:
painful hw
doesn't upload notes
But HW is super painful he assigns so much ow oof ouch owie :(
(also this is a reminder for u to leave reviews!! for ur classes)
Professor Kofi is an exceptional calculus instructor. His expertise in the subject matter is truly impressive, and he has a talent for making complex concepts easy to understand. His lectures are engaging and interactive, and he creates a welcoming environment for students to ask questions and participate in discussions. He also provides clear and detailed feedback on assignments, helping students to improve their understanding and skills. Overall, Professor Kofi's class is a great learning experience and I highly recommend him as an instructor for anyone interested in calculus.
I have never taken a class with students feeling so divided over the quality of a professor. People often joked about how all the positive bruinwalk reviews of Koffi are him with a bunch of fake accounts, and... Koffi is the exact kind of man who would do that. He is by far the worst professor I have had the misfortune of taking at UCLA, and truly should not be teaching. You will learn more if you skip class, don't even try reading his lecture notes (which are years old and all in cursive) and just read the textbook like its the religious text of your choice.
.
This brings up another issue: this class was so incredibly unorganized. Since week 1, Koffi was constantly 3-6 lectures behind schedule. The problem was that discussion sections didn’t take this into account, so the TA’s were always ahead of schedule. We were learning about TNB frames in section without even knowing cross product in lecture. Weekly homework also covered material from 1-2 weeks ago, which just completely threw off my groove. When I asked Koffi if he could post the upcoming homework earlier, he refused and responded with a rude email.
.
We all know Koffi is a poor lecturer. And if that was the only thing bad about him, he wouldn't be that bad. He actively fostered an unhealthy learning environment, taking the time out of each lecture to call the students on zoom lazy (literally for minutes on end). Now, I always attended lecture in person, but the fact that he wasted our time when he was already 2 weeks behind was… frustrating. He also went on tirades during office hours and review sessions about literally anything other than math. Oh, he also accidentally posted his response to being rejected from a job he applied for in the zoom chat. So that shows you where his priorities lay. Not with the students.
.
His midterms are slightly challenging, but nothing unexpected. The final was significantly more difficult, with lots of conceptual material asking you to prove whether conditions are true/false. This is content that he never mentioned in review sessions, and explicitly said he would not be including on the final. Though the homework (taken directly from the book) always included the challenge questions at the end of each chapter. Homework assignments took very long (because they had lots of challenge questions).
.
Koffi crammed a weeks worth of lecture material into the weekend before finals week, and assigned 2 or 3 weeks worth of homework during finals week. And held lecture during finals week. He also held virtual lecture on a federal holiday. This man expects you to treat this class like it is the only class you are taking.
.
Whenever I asked him a question or emailed him, he was extremely combative and outright rude. I’m not exaggerating when I say I felt like Koffi was low-key being a bully. I was having a conversation with him via email regarding grades, and after initially addressing him in the first email with “Dear Professor Enakoutsa, I hope this email finds you well…” I followed standard email etiquette and in my second email to him in the chain, continued the conversation without readdressing him again. Well, he did NOT like that and said: “Hi: Have you forgotten the format of the email? Koffi E”. All because I did not begin every email with “Dear Professor Enakoutsa”… I felt like he was just enjoying his power trip, which is such a shame.
.
Overall, Professor Koffi Enakoutsa (as that is how he likes to be addressed) near single-handedly made me change majors. Professors in the math department don’t need to try and make math enjoyable, but they shouldn’t actively make the process of learning math dreadful. And that is where Enakoutsa fails.
