Professor butcher made me very angry. he wasnt very good at explaining what was going to be on the exam and made the class very intimidating to ask questions. He also explaining things that he really had no knowledge of (like how he feels about drug addiction and alcoholism). do the readings and do well on the quizzes, it will save your ass!

This class was way more stressful than it needed to be. It actually made me like neuroscience less than before. The lectures were very scattered and the questions were so random! Despite memorizing the 300 something pages required for reading for just the midterm, the midterm was tricky and somewhat tough. He does seem like a really nice guy and the curve is definitely generous. If you like being surprised on tests, take the class with him. If you like having structure and knowing what to study then maybe consider taking another professor.

i agree that butcher's lectures can be scattered. however, if you're willing to put in the time to read the book (read, not skim) its not that bad. his curve is very generous. i disagree with those who say he shows videos just b/c he doesn't want to teach. the videos reinforce what the book says, and i personally enjoyed them. i say he's a good professor and do recommend him.

Prof. Butcher has been one of my favorite professors in my time here at UCLA. He's funny, sweet, and extremely understanding. I can't understand all the negative reviews he's been getting.

Time and again he cut down the required reading to make things easier on all the students. He would explain difficult concepts thoroughly and in detail. He provided multitudes of slides and overhead images to help illustrate his points. His lectures were good enough that I got an A on his exams without having to read the book.

His exams were extremely fair. There were no trick questions, and the attention paid to details wasn't ridiculous. If you studied your notes well you could do a good job. He also gave people plenty of time to do the exams in. The curve was fairly tight though.

Prof. Butcher does his best to make a difficult subject comprehensible. However, if you tend to do poorly in Biology courses, you'll do badly in Psych 115. Behavioral Neuroscience requires a good memory. Don't blame the professor.

I agree with those who have said to choose your courses wisely.

Well I didn't think Butcher was that horrible. I think this is because I loved the material. However, if you are looking for a GPA booster or anything of this kind DO NOT take this class. The exams are VERY VERY difficult. (all of which are multiple choice and very detailed) He likes to test you on information that he doesn't really go over so if you are studying for the exam you basically have to know every detail of the reading and the lecture.

If you don't have background in Neuroscience, do not take him. If you do, prepare to memorize the book, lectures are useless ( I always attend lectures). He is discorganized and burned out, he needs some rest.

The midterm was straight forward (most of the questions came from lecture material or from the assigned reading) The final, however, was ridiculous. He asked detailed questions, such as if you want to see a star how many degrees should you turn your eye? a)6 b) 9 c) 0 d) 20 or after age 65 the chance of getting Alzheimer's disease doubles every ___ years? a) 9.68 b) 7.85 c) 14.82 d) 5.00. The highest score was 75/100 and the average was somewhere in 50's. Basically, the final grade was based on how well the students guessed! If you decided to take Butcher, be sure that you learn the all the little details. The best thing about the class was that there was no paper to turn in at the end! Good luck!!

This guy is pretty easy, if you like pure multiple choice tests. He recycles questions too so if you have the old tests from previous quarters it can be really helpful. If you want to do well you have to do the reading in the book and go to lecture or buy the lecture notes.

I took this class during summer school. Bad idea. The class is hard enough as is, but having it crammed into 6 weeks? Baaaaad. Butcher is a nice guy. His lectures were decent. The videos he showed were interesting. His tests were hard. There were some easy questions, but there were so many nit-picky detailed questions. Unfortunately, he's supposed to be the easiest Psych 115 professor (said my TA). If Butcher is considered easy, I'm genuinely scared for the people who had other profs for psych 115.

Butcher is a great professor. I thought his lectures were good and the videos he shows are a nice break. He is really not that hard, just make sure you do the reading and buy the lecture notes. He is best psych professor that I have had, so take him if you can!
