I stumbled across this class because it sounded interesting and worked with my schedule, but it was the best possible decision that I could have made. Professor Duquette-Rury is the best professor at UCLA. She is incredibly kind, clear, helpful, and clear. She introduced me to a topic that has become my passion. She introduced theories about migration that are often underrepresented in the normative conversations. She provides important historical contexts and helps students track how migration has changed over time. She encourages participation in class, and students often participate with thoughtful and analytical comments. She takes her time to ensure that each student understand the materials. The TAs that she chooses to lead discussion are also passionate and well-versed on each topic, often encouraging students to participate--and they do! There is no textbook for the class, as she uploads academic articles to CCLE. There are several quizzes and papers throughout the course, including a final paper that requires students to conduct an interview with an immigrant and use the information from the interview to align with a theory discussed in class. Please take this class!

The class itself may not be enticing at first, but Professor Duquette MADE us interested. She engaged everyone within the class and valued everyone's opinions and answers. For understanding the content, she let us know what we needed to know and emphasized it clearly. Such an overall wonderful professor who really cared about her students and that each individual learned something. Love her, take her class if you have a chance!!

At first I struggled with this class because I got a 60% on the first quiz and my first two papers received 90% and 86%. However, out of the three quizzes you get to drop one and I ended up getting 100% on the last two quizzes. A really great thing about this class is that they grade you based on improvement. I did better on my last two papers and got an A in the class. There are a lot of readings but you don't really have to read them until you need to write a paper because she discusses the important parts of the readings during lecture. This class is definitely easier if you're a good writer. The Duquette is such a sweet and funny lady, and wants to give out as many A's as possible; you just have to earn it. ALSO no textbooks! The course material is just the readings she posts on CCLE, so no need to worry about finding textbooks for this class :)

Duquette is a great lecturer and really explains the concepts clearly. Though she does put the slides on ccle, you must go to lecture because she includes many important facts that are not on the slides. There are 4 papers, 3 quizzes, and a lot of readings, but if you pay attention in lecture and discussion, you should be fine.
