Quarter: Fall 2017
Grade: A
Nov. 2, 2018

This man is all cute and funny and stuff in the beginning, but that does not reflect on his final. He gives you 5 quizzes on the material during the quarter which are fairly easy. His midterm is also fairly easy and straightforward too. So you would expect the final to be the same, right?

Absolutely not. He comes down with the hammer of wrath.

Also, another annoying thing he does is he gives you problems that have weird numbers, so it makes you think you are doing the problem wrong. Don't be fooled if your answer looks whack.

Overall though, not too hard of a course and super doable. Make sure to know all the problems he assigns in the textbooks and you'll be gucci. Just don't slack on the final.

I love Laurence Lavelle so much! He is such a sweet old man. I took 14A and 14B with him, and I would take every chemistry class with Lavelle if I could. He is very helpful and I only went to office hours twice but he remembered me. The tests are very fair and expected. Only thing is, you should do the homework because he will put at least one homework problem on the final and it can be tricky sometimes.

Lavelle is one of the sweetest professors I've had at UCLA. I have very little knowledge when it comes to chemistry, and so for those who have taken AP Chemistry or other college level chem, this class won't be too difficult. Some of the concepts he discussed were difficult to understand and so going to office hours or having a good TA will benefit you immensely. The best way to study for this class is to do practice problems -- the homework only requires 7 problems each week, but I STRONGLY encourage you to do as many as possible.

Lavelle provides tons of resources for his students -- dozens of office hours, online modules, study sessions, etc. It's up to you to take advantage of them, and I really wish I had early on in the quarter. The final grades were generously curved at the end, but do not rely on the curve -- do well from the beginning and you will be fine.

Lavelle was the most caring professor I have ever had. He provides students with many resources for extra help in understanding the material. He genuinely wants students to pass and do their best. His lectures are clear: uses power point slides to provide main ideas and visuals, and he will stop in between each important point on the slides to thoroughly explain them. Very approachable. Very good experience taking this class overall. HIGHLY, HIGHLY RECOMMEND :)

I came into this class absolutely absent of all my high school chem knowledge, scared this being a pre-med weeder course, my first college science class in general, and everyone in that gigantic lecture a cut-throat pre-med. Those fears and concerns Lavelle understood fully, and every moment he wants students to spend in lecture, on practice problems, UA sessions, etc. he plans with efficiency and success for every student in mind. Lectures, although sometimes dull (a combination of the subject and his voice), he tries genuinely to engage and it pays off. UA session I found especially helpful, they are FREE mini tutoring sessions, GO TO THEM. Practice problems can either be utilized to fulfill the minimum requirement or go way beyond, find somewhere in the middle! Also, definitely push TAs to go over them, especially the confusing ones. I think overall, the class is definitely what you make of it, and not even being a pre-med, I landed right where my effort wanted me to go. Would definitely want people to experience Lavelle! I wouldn't be surprised if he was the college professor who cared most about his students, and without a doubt knows how to teach this class well.

!!!SELLING COURSE READER AND QUIZ WORKBOOK!!!
$30 for course reader and workbook together - a steal because I got it for $45.
Lavelle no longer sells these because of a change in the department policy. Nonetheless, it is an amazing resource for acing exams. The 2015 version is an almost word-for-word carbon copy of his lectures with additional midterms and finals from past years. Saved me multiple times because I was prepared for his curveball questions. The quiz workbook prepares you for the quizzes well, which should be easy points.
CONTACT: ********** if you would like to purchase.

Tips for doing well:
1) Go to lecture. He often uses further discussion of the textbook material on exams.
2) Do ALL the homework. Don't be lazy and you won't fail.
3) Aim for a 93% on quizzes and exams. With your other easy points you should get an A.
