Ok for the person two comments below I can tell you're a bitter student who took Chem last year with lavelle and did not do well. This is the first time Li will be teaching 14a so you can't know what you claim to know about her exams and teaching method in that class. She's an award winning instructor who got a job at UCLA right after her PH.D. I'm sure she's qualified. You just want people to go into lavelles class so their gpa can take a hit like yours so transparently did. I personally had lavelle and he is not great his exams are very difficult often combining different concepts per question he says himself he has trick questions to separate A from B and B's from C's. Please stop trying to steer new freshmen away from Li just cause they'll have an easier time than you and I did with lavelle. Having taken lavelle I would choose Li in a heartbeat. I mean look at the percent of A's in lavelles class SO FEW !

I took both 14A and 14B with Dr Lavelle. Overall he is a good professor. I'd say that his lectures are well organized and he teaches well. And he often pull some fun chemistry jokes after his Friday lectures.

He breaks down your grades into not only a midterm and a final, but also quizzes and weekly discussion on Chemistry Community online. On one hand this reduces your stress on the midterm and final, but on the other hand, with the fact that those quizzes are often very hard, you need to study for chem quite regularly, which can be kind of stressful when you have other assignments or when all the midterms come together.

However, I have to say that his exams are difficult. After having both 14A and 14B with him, it seems that either his midterm or his final will be very very hard, and you will find yourself lost in his questions because some of his questions may be weird. Compared to this his other exam seems pretty easy, but that also gives a high average expected.

So in short, this class is useful and Dr Lavelle is a nice professor and this is a useful class, but this class is by no means an easy one.

Incoming freshman: do not take Lavelle!!!! He is the hardest chemistry professor for general chemistry. Yes he is a sweet man and tries to give a lot of resources, but at the end of the day his quizzes screw you over since you will not be prepared for them at all, and his final scarred me for life. Please chose another professor if you can!! This professor ruined my first 2 quarters of college.

I took Lavelle for both Chem14A and 14B and got an A in both. He's actually not that bad. His lectures are podcasted, but I went to class anyway. He's a nice guy but his tests are crazy. He throws hardballs at you. You have 3 quizzes in discussion. Those are extremely hard and time consuming. I didn't finish my quizzes most of the time, but one quiz grade is replaced by take home quizzes that you turn in. Make sure you do those because they aren't required, but you could get 100% on those and replace a quiz grade! The quizzes are apparently made by the TA's, and they make it so hard for some reason and so long. You really have to know what you're doing. I recommend doing all the homework problems even though they're not required and it seems like a lot. If you actually work through them, they're not that bad. Also do all the past midterms he gives you in the back of the course reader. The books and course readers are so expensive. But anyways, the midterm and final, you're given a lot of amount of time to finish them, so you could take your time in them compared to quizzes where you only have 40 min to finish. He also requires you to post on the Chemistry Community every week. You either post a question or answer a question. I always answer questions. It's pretty easy. Discussion sections are required, but they actually helped. Dan Hatfield was a great TA! He's really chill too.

Great class! Lavelle was awesome and didn't need to study too hard, but the books were definitely critical.
