Quarter: Spring 2016
Grade: A

Class was on Latinx Families in the US. Took this class a few years back.

Abrego always lectures like she's tired or would rather be anywhere else. Makes you lose your passion over the material when a professor makes the topics sound boring and unappealing. She comes off a bit pretentious since she loves talking about how her articles win awards. She also loves talking negatively about white people and their families which is interesting since there were a few in the class though she probably did not care. Except for one lecture on sterilization of women in LA, material is somewhat relatable yet not very innovative if you are a Latinx individual. Grading wise, its a pretty easy A. Just talk in section and agree with popular mentality. She also makes the final assignment seem really difficult (it is not). My TA also seemed sort of lazy. On the plus side, she is good at answering your emails and is willing to see you in office hours if needed.

Would I recommend her or take her again? Honestly no. But if you want an A, you will be fine.

Quarter: Fall 2023
Grade: A+

This class is made up of 2 take home quizzes that are open note, 4 reading reflections, and 1 annotated bibliography at the end of the quarter (makes up a lot of your grade). Not many assignments but super easy if you go to class, do the readings, and understand the material. She records lectures but there is a participation part of your grade that can be made up with the occasional in-class participation. The one con with this class is the reading/content load. Expect 50-100 pages of reading a week and sometimes a 30minute-2hour long documentary. All the content is super interesting about social justice and issues in Central America. I learned so much and I am very glad I took this class.

Quarter: Winter 2021
Grade: A

So for CS 10B, the original professor had something occur so Professor Abrego took over the course, and even through the transition to a new syllabus Professor Abrego was understanding of the effects of the pandemic and did not want to burden students with so much work. She is one of the most generous and kindest professors I have met at UCLA. I really enjoyed her lectures and going to office hours and just discussing my thoughts or even concepts we are learning in the class. I really hope students take her class as she is one of the most inspiring professors I have met and while we may have our differences in opinions about certain issues she is willing to listen and provide her perspective on them. The assignment for CS 10B was a midterm that can be either an essay or a creative project on your social location and how that affected your educational journey to UCLA and a final of a research proposal that students had plenty of time to work on. I highly recommend that students take Professor Abrego whether for CS 10B or any other courses she teaches.
