I didn't like this quarter at ALL! All she gives you is the lecture videos and textbooks. She then tells you to talk to your TA if you have any questions. I mean she is the professor. So anyway, I found this quarter really challenging BECAUSE of the PANDEMIC. She is not generous on curving. Even if you get a 6/10 in one out of the 10 worksheets, she won't even curve it. Nick can be a tough grader so go talk to him regarding any worksheets or unit assessments. Honestly, these Unit Assessment were WAY HARDER than previous quarters. If your a good test taker, take her class. If not, don't even bother. There is no extra credit, no participation points. YOUR GRADE IS BASED ON THESE WORKSHEETS AND UNIT ASSESSMENTS. Getting a B+ was the worst for me. I was super close to an A- but she didn't bother curving one of my assessments (which brought my grade down). She's not engaging (even though it is an asynchronous class) and I expected a lot from her. Good luck for those taking her.
I LOVED this class. I did take it during COVID times, which definitely changed things. All the lectures, exams, and worksheets were given to us week 1, and so you have to be self-disciplined and good at time management to keep on track with the units. I found the lectures to be very organized and engaging, although the readings did seem quite long-winded at times. I loved getting to watch the lectures at my own time, and the material is quite interesting, especially if you are interested in a future career in law. I can't speak for this class post-COVID, but I loved this class so much I would have definitely taken it in person too. It's not an easy A, but it was challenging in a good way and I felt it prepared me for future endeavors. The professor seemed like a lovely person, although I found my TA to be kind of a harsh grader. Like another review said, this online class is not for those who value social interaction with classmates, but this did not bother me personally.
I wanted to like this class so much. The material is very interesting, and despite my hatred for this class, I still believe that. However, Professor Johns gave us all of the material day 1, all of the worksheets day 1, all of the assessments (exams) day 1, and told us good luck. She provided lectures, but they were all pre-recorded with no option of a live session at any point. There were also no discussion sections, it was strictly "email your TA if you have a question". She told us in her introductory video that she was doing this to make it easier on us, but it was really to make it easier on her. This class was not easy at all. She also told us under no circumstances can we work with other students, which while understandable for exams, would have been a lifesaver for worksheets. It is honestly pathetic that a world-renowned institution like UCLA would allow this. I got 3 (!!!) emails from her the entire quarter and that was it. Sure, I could have asked for a meeting, but that is not good enough. If you do not offer some sort of live section for the entire class, then is it really a class at all?
At the beginning of the quarter, we had a groupme. Someone told her about it, she got mad, and said if it happened again she would report us to the dean. At that point, any social interaction went out the window. In all of my other classes, I met some great people and even a few I would consider friends. All I got from this class was a few messages saying "hey can you help me with worksheet 8". Under no circumstances should you take this class if you want any form of social interaction with either the professors or students. I would never take this class again so long as it's online. If you like this type of class, then I am sure you'll love it. For anyone else, stay away. Avoid like the plague.
Professor Johns makes international law (a topic that could otherwise be sort of boring/irrelevant) pretty interesting- her lectures are engaging and extremely well organized. There are weekly quizzes in section that are super easy, just set aside 20 minutes or so to read the cases and you'll be fine as the questions are simple fact based questions. Her midterm was a bit harder than I expected actually, but she does curve it generously and I really should have just studied more. The tests are worth most of your grade (70%) however given COVID-19 our final was changed into a set of essay questions that were take-home. The take-home final took a significant amount of time and although I respected her as being fair during the rest of the time I took the class I think she could have been a little more understanding.
This was probably the most fun and engaging poli sci class I've taken here at UCLA. Professor Johns is an amazing lecturer who is super helpful and fun to talk to outside of class. She makes the materials easier to understand despite the concepts being complex. Also she kind of writes the textbook materials for this class so if you have any questions on the readings, you can go directly to her because she wrote it. Overall, take the class. Her exams are a little hard but if you go to lectures, do the readings, and study, then you'll be fine.
100% recommend taking 123 w Prof. Johns
her lectures are very engaging and she wrote her own book, so you'll always read exactly what you need to know & the reading won't be tedious. study at least 3 days before the exams because there is a lot of memorization but her curve is AMAZING. one quiz at each section based on a case reading, really helps understand concepts discussed that week. participation is 15% but you'll find yourself asking questions and answering even if you're not confident (like me). overall, a great class, would definitely take her again!
This class is tough but very rewarding. Professor Johns is structured and the book she's written goes perfectly with the class. The shaw readings were difficult reads so hopefully by the time you take this class, she's finished her book. I'd take this class if I were you!
Prof Johns is honestly amazing and very fair. Her lectures (and TA discussion sections) are super structured. She wrote the course reader and almost all the readings, which makes the course information a lot easier to navigate. The readings aren't difficult, but there is a decent amount of it. If you take good lecture notes and know the readings well, it shouldn't be too difficult to study for the exams.
The class was very straight-forward and very well organized. I have gotten by in most classes with just paying attention in lecture but I definitely found the need to read her textbook PDFs that she assigns. There's a lot of material covered in the exams so you will definitely need to study but she doesn't play games or try to pull any fast ones - it is all very straight forward. Also, she did not upload her lecture slides or provide study guides for the midterm/final so that is something to be aware of as well.
