Do not trust bruinwalk... You will regret it if you take it. Ifkyk
FYI, the grade distribution on bruinwalk is NOT reflective of what the actual distribution is for post covid... I came into this class hoping I could learn something about Asian Americans and get an A, and received the lowest grade ever in college. Just avoid if you are standing at the same crossroad.
This class is pretty heavy with readings and material, in addition to the writing requirement of 20 pages for Writing II. BUT Professor Tamai makes all of the time worth it! She is the nicest professor I have ever had and really wants to help and connect with students. She gives lots of comments and feedback on essays that REALLY improve your writing skills in a couple weeks/papers. Overall, she really made the class enjoyable and the class was full of interesting material. :)

For this class, you will have to show up for every lecture since her PowerPoint are not posted, and they will be very helpful for your final. The main part of the class will be a presentation in your discussion, which is pretty easy, I think. Then, you have an essay that you can write on any topic you want. I recommend writing on something modern because your final will cover more historical topics that you won't be able to use if you write about them in your first paper. There are no tests, and the final is a take-home essay that Tamai gives you an entire weekend to complete. This class is full of supportive people, and they want you to succeed. At the end of the class, you are able to write an evaluation of what grade you think you deserve and they actually take your opinion into consideration.
Summary: I definitely recommend this class if you want an easy GE (there are easier ones, but I found this class especially rewarding), and I also think that you will definitely learn something new. If you are an Asian you may even take something extra away from the class.
I highly enjoyed the topics we covered in this class. Professor Welty is an engaging lecturer, and well versed in issues that pertained to the Asian American community in the past and now. I am selling The New Chinese America for $23, it is in perfect condition. Email me at ************* if interested.
Professor Welty is an amazing professor that is engaging and funny in lectures! This has been one of my favorite classes so far. This is an "easy G.E." where you'll do well only if you're well-engaged and understand the material (which isn't that difficult). The only downside to this is that there is quite a bit of reading accompanying *each lecture*.
Also, I'm selling the three textbooks needed for the class. Just email me at *************
I really liked this class there was a ridiculous about of reading but there was no test just essays so as long as you went to the lectures you should be good I did the reading just in case. The discussion is mandatory and the attendance for it is very harsh. The homework in this class is reading and she has videos you have to watch and fill out worksheets these can be pretty lengthy. Was a very easy class would recommend. Also, I loved the lectures they were very organized and easy to understand and Tamni was always quick to respond to emails and really nice.
Take this class, pay attention, and learn something. Best professor you can take this class with and highly recommend if you need writing credit. Sure there's a lot of reading, but you have plenty of time and most of it is useful. If anything, the books are more important than the assigned reading, and if you know someone who already took the class, it's the same.
I really liked this class! I took it my first quarter at UCLA and the professor was really passionate about the subject material. I did the readings for the first few weeks and then I slacked off a buuuunch, but if you listen to the lectures in class and take decent notes based on those, you're good to go! Write your essay on something you're passionate about, because the whole class will be way more enjoyable then. :)
take this class! it will feel so rewarding. i'm not quite sure why i got an A- bc i worked really hard and it makes me kinda sad but i still absolutely loved the class, the material, and my TA haha. took it my first quarter of my first year and it made my transition to ucla a little more special.
