Winter 2025 - This was my favorite GE I've taken at UCLA. You literally get to watch movies for a class, if you complain about that your classes are too easy. The movies are good too! Big fan of The Cranes Are Flying, Kin-Dza-Dza, Stalker, Moscow Does Not Believe in Tears, and even Battleship Potemkin. (A couple are admittedly a little boring, looking at you Earth). You learn some general history of the Soviet Union alongside the class too. There's a quiz every two weeks (Very easy, if you watched the movie and listened to the lecture or even just read the lecture on your own time, you'll ace all of these.) The midterm was a couple short answer questions and some fill in the blank. The final was the same as the midterm but with two essays. Take this class!

Winter 2025 - I LOVED this class. As a Gender Studies major I had no idea what I was getting into by taking a Russian course but I am so glad I did. Lilya is a fantastic professor and has a lot of knowledge about Russian literature and cinema. The final grade is based on participation, attendance, and three 5-7 page papers throughout the quarter. I genuinely looked forward to going to this class and would highly recommend it to others. It is one of the more challenging Gender Studies courses I've taken but still stress-free and worth it. If you can you should definitely take this class.
