DR. K is the gold of UCLA. Hella educated, bright, and charismatic. Her class is really interesting: the readings are fun to read, but you HAVE TO FINISH and actually do close readings to process it. So take it, work on it, and you will be fine.
Kaganovsky is my favorite teacher so far!! The class essentially walks through the history of film, delving deeper into Russian film specifically. Much of it is Soviet film. We watched them in order of the different eras, so you can really see how things changed and evolved on each other. (It’s better if you speak Russian but you absolutely don't need to, everything has subtitles). Workload is manageable (weekly readings, total of five movie reflections for the whole quarter). Tests are made t be easy, prof is not trying to fail you.
My TA (Marianna) was also amazing, and made discussion actually helpful to the class. So would absolutely take again.
Professor Kaganovsky really manages to fit a whole lot of content into a presentable and digestable manner for her students. Her passion for this topic is very evident and she does a great job in instilling that interest in her students. We watched rougly one film each week and discussed it in the following class. Her class is thought provoking and she is really able to make the discussion in class engaging. Definitely one of my favorite classes at UCLA so far. I genuinely left the class with so much knowledge and appreciation for the subject matter. If you can take this class you 100% should.
