Professor Juliano was quite a good writing teacher. She led thought-provoking discussion and gave fairly interesting assignments.

While the other reviewer was correct that she is somewhat of a hardsh grader, she is quite fair and clear about her expectations. Participation and showing up to class on time is very important if you want to get a good grade. Also, make sure to meet her in office hours for your essay. She gave me a lot of ideas on how to improve my essays. She's very approachable and wants to help.

Quarter: Fall 2015
Grade: A+

The class is a small class (around 20 people), and attendance is required. I had to miss a day and was asked to bring in a sick note if I didn't want to lose credit for what I missed. Before every lecture there was assigned reading, which was often a lot of reading, but some of the articles were interesting; during class you would be asked to answer questions about the reading and turn it in but they were not graded harshly. We had to write 3 essays in this class and turn in drafts. The drafts were not graded for credit, but I would recommend turning in a good draft because she makes a ton of edits that are helpful for the final paper. We also did peer review sessions in class and it was helpful to have classmates look over a completed draft .The essays were based off of the class readings and the prompts were kind of confusing and vague, which I often found very frustrating. However, she does offer a lot of guidance and gives you a lot of creative freedom. I think my friends took easier English comp classes, because I found this class very time consuming. But I did end up with a good grade and was overall pleased.

Quarter: Fall 2023
Grade: A+

As a STEM major that dreads English classes, I can say for sure this class was engaging and fun to be part of. They were a very engaging professor and very student oriented.

The content itself is not too challenging, I think the thing that was hard to balance sometimes was being confused on exactly what we had to do to improve the scores of our first drafted essays.

All I can really say is, GO TO OFFICE HOURS! They are the best way to get DIRECT FEEDBACK and ask CRITICAL questions that will help you increase the score of your drafts.

Also, make sure to participate, makes the class easier to enjoy and it also helps build a friendlier class environment.

The professor needs to tell the students what she actually wants in the essay and also teach material that would actually help us write better. Also she grades the essays like we are upper class english majors which most of the students in the class are not.

Quarter: Fall 2016
Grade: A-

I was really scared of this class because of all the reviews she had saying she was hard and knowing that I am not a strong writer made it even scarier. And yes, this class was tough BUT it taught me a lot. I had to put a lot of effort into this class. I got a D- on the first essay so I was really scared I was going to do horrible in this class after that. But I feel like one of the reasons why I got a bad grade was because I was struggling yet I did not ask for help cause I was afraid to.

So I am telling anyone who takes this class now, IT REALLY HELPS to go to office hours. I went for the next essay and she helped me A LOT, I asked her a ton of questions. Sometimes I even asked the same question more than once cause I was still confused but hey it helped. If you show you want to improve, she will guide you as much as she can. Get as much help as you need.

Then there are other assignments that will boost your grade such as a presentation, debate (I was scared for this too, but it was not as bad as I thought it would be and I am a pretty shy person who does not like doing debates), reading responses and extra credit etc.

My point being, if you are like me who did have this professor as your first choice, don't be afraid. I struggled but I improved as I progressed throughout the quarter and actually ended getting an A- in the class which made me really happy. It is a good learning experience, and if you put in the effort you will be just fine.

Quarter: Fall 2017
Grade: A+

As other reviewers have stated, this class is more difficult than other EngComp3's. The course load is heavier and class contribution is important. Assignments included a presentation, a debate, five written responses to the readings (you won't need the textbooks btw), and two essays (5+ pages and10+ pages). Most students do badly on their first midterm (I believe the average was a C) so be sure to do everything that can get you extra credit, as it will boost your grade. Professor Juliano is helpful to those who seek guidance, but book her office hours well in advance or you won't have a chance. Her directions are often unclear or conflicting, but she makes a solid effort in class to take questions and clear up any confusion surrounding her assignments. If you have enrolled in a cluster or any other heavy-workload class, this class will prove especially stressful. That being said, the tight-knit atmosphere was great for making friends, and I learned a lot about time management.

I took EngComp3D with Professor Juliano and thoroughly enjoyed the class and all of the reading material. Dr. Juliano walks you through all the steps in essay writing and gives you lots of materials and references to ensure success. If you go to class, participate, do the readings, and put some effort into your writing assignments it is very easy to succeed.

Dr. Juliano is also very accessible and wants to help you within reason. Make sure to sign up for office hours in advance because the slots fill up quickly!

I genuinely liked this class and would recommend taking Juliano. I started off the quarter feeling very panic about this course. The theme "theater in politics" was definitely not something I had much background knowledge in especially as a non-US citizen. The first essay did not go well for me, I think I got a 70+ which was a C (even with extra credits). Fortunately it did not count much towards the final grade and as a result I started to go to her office hour (be sure to book early cause it fills up quickly) every week when drafting and revising the second essay, and she was really clear on her expectations for my essay. The topic for the second essay was really flexible (can be about almost anything as long as slightly relevant to one of the readings), and was heavily research-based. Two reading logs every week could be exhausting but I found most of the readings she assigned interesting and not very long. Earning extra credits through reading log was highly probable, and tons of other extra credits were given. I did not expect getting an A+ at all so I guess she was pretty generous when assigning final letter grades.
