This class is GREAT. If you're looking for an easy class to satisfy the Social Analysis GE this should be it. Although I personally took this as a lower div for my major, there were plenty of students in other majors that were there for the GE or minor req. Now despite that it was a two hour 8 am lecture, they are not mandatory and it's also once a week. Professor Guillén is so compassionate towards all her students. She cares about your opinion and what you have to say, and does her best to make the lecture more discussion based given the sensitive topics surrounding education presented.
As for grades, there's only three 1-2 page reflection assignments for the 3 units of the class (preschool, k-12, and higher ed) with multiple prompts you can choose from, and one final 5 page paper or podcast on the topic of your choice, so long as it relates to anything mentioned throughout the quarter. Discussion section is mandatory, but the TA's are amazing! If you can get Micaela Bronstein, she's the best. I believe the two TA's from Fall 2024 will be apart of EDUC 10 team for Winter and Spring quarter as well!
Professor Guillen was amazing, she was the only professor who acknowledged how hard this quarter was mentally with the conflicts on campus and protesting, she was a delight to have. The content was interesting and I liked the discussion section, I never found myself not wanting to go to class.
This class is so easy I can't believe it counts for 5 credits. There is one reflection per week (~1 page double-spaced) about what you learned. Then, there is a final essay of 5-7 pages about a topic that you're interested in. Once again, super easy grading (practically for completion). Participation is mandatory, although the lecture had 150 people this quarter, so she never checked. Highly recommend taking this class. The professor is super kind and understanding.
