I took Dr. Sanchez Lopez’s State Violence and Social Movements in the Americas course through the Transfer Summer Program (TSP) when it was online. The course grade consisted of an argument analysis, annotated bibliography related to the research, and the research paper itself. Attendance and participation, as well as PLF sessions, were also part of the grade. I found the argument analysis to be a thought-provoking assignment because the reading was on an interesting topic. The annotated bibliography could be tedious, but with more clarification and instruction from my PLF, Nia, it was more manageable. The research paper was a lot of work, but a great introduction to archival research. If you choose a topic that interests you, it can be a really insightful project. As for class meetings, they were short if not useful. During the first half of the session, class time was meant to be used for discussing our assigned readings, but after the second half, the readings were canceled so that we could focus on our research papers. We were also required to attend quick office hours with Dr. Sanchez Lopez to answer any questions. My PLF was also extremely helpful for the research paper, and she really motivated me and affirmed my topic. In addition, I was going through a difficult time very early in the program, and Dr. Sanchez Lopez was very accommodating when that was communicated to him. Overall, he is a relaxed, easy-going, and caring professor, and it was not too difficult to get an A.
