Be mindful of the grading on tests in this class. TAs don't even understand their own grading and Henary acts extremely impatient when asked to look at a test again. Even when he/his team made a mistake on a student's test, he does not admit and tries to brush it off. Had to visit his OH/office 5+ times and tolerate his attitude to finally get back the points that justifiably should not be taken off in the first place.

Henary was incredibly unclear, not only about what he wanted from us as students but also how the class was organized. He does have a thick accent, but aside from that, he did not give very good explanations of his slides, instead just basically read off formulas. He is a super nice professor and always visited lab, and I'm sure he would help any students who came to him with problems, but I just found his class incredibly confusing and frustrating.

Your grade in this class and probably any lab depends heavily on your TA. The midterm and final do count for a significant part but are pretty easy. The midterm was online for us because of COVID and was not too difficult, most answers could be found on his lecture slides. The final was trickier and longer but not impossible as he also allowed us one 8.5x11" cheatsheet during the test. Before the midterm and final, Henary posts helpful practice problems, which I definitely recommend completing. The grading of both is a little sus as the TAs do it. I got 10% less than my friend and we had the same answers but different TAs, however, after talking to Henary, he regarded mine and I got ~9% boost. So, he is understanding if you talk to him during his office hours even though he can seem kind of scary.

I'm ngl, I only attended 2 of his lectures. I got by just fine reading his lecture slides instead, just be sure that you can actually do the example problems in the slides.

The actual lab part was fine and straightforward. You will need to buy the lab supplies (blue lab coat, goggles, and lab notebook), and I recommend doing it through AXE and purchasing the 100-page one if you need to do orgo lab, too. My TA was very chill, too chill actually. He did not grade any of our pre/post labs until days before the final which kinda sucks as it is worth 40% of your grade, but it all worked out in the end.

All-in-all, the class was not bad and I would take Henary again.

Honestly not bad! But your never really see the guy... The labs are a bit tedious and long though so definitely be careful!

Professor Henary is honestly super hard to understand and sometimes rushes through his lecture slides like crazy. However, his labs are pretty simple and you can figure it all out without his lectures. The TA I had was absolutely killer with her grades though. The midterms and finals weren't too bad. The only part of the labs I hated were the excel graphs.

Dr. Henary knew the material well, but his delivery of the material could use some work. He often just talked the whole lecture, and while he did ask for questions, I feel that people often were not comfortable asking them because of his response. Sometimes he would answer what you asked, but other times not. Lectures help, but I would say that if you did well in 14A and B, that you may not need to go unless he changes the way he does them. Lab sections were really short as this was taken during COVID, so don't rely on this if classes are back in person. They just consisted of watching someone else do the experiment and then you used your data to do the analysis. They varied from taking almost no time to being a little time consuming. The tests were fair and he gave us 6-8 hours to do them. You do need to study for them, but if you do this, you will be okay. He did hold review sessions, but he just went over his slides again so they were not too helpful.

Overall I thought this was a pretty good class. It really helps to be added to a class groupme because students help each other with any wondering questions. The lectures were pretty straightforward. I stopped going to lecture halfway through the class and just went off reading the lecture slides. The labs were a lot shorter but it was a perfect opportunity to ask questions about the material and the lab questions. The only thing you got to worry about doing is the lab reports which are pretty tedious sometimes, but very doable. Overall, this class is super easy with the online format.

I was a little nervous coming into this class because of all the discouraging reviews on Bruinwalk, but when actually taking it, I didn't find it as bad as people make it out to be. Personally, I didn't think he was hard to understand during lecture (whether for his accent or for his explanations), but even if he is hard to understand, I often learned from the slides by themselves even without going to lecture. Professor Henary also encourages people to ask questions and tries to clarify things if people say it's unclear. The TAs are really helpful and clarified things that might have confusing from lecture. Both Professor Henary and the TAs usually went over the labs during class so you have an idea of what to do when you start them. I would suggest going to/watching all the lectures if you can because I found that when I skipped them or didn't pay attention, it would be harder to do the labs. During lecture, he also points out specific things that may show up on exams and tells you how he wants you to answer problems. Lab attendance is mandatory, but they were always really helpful.

I would recommend taking 14BL after taking 14B. I took AP chem in high school and took this class two quarters after taking 14B, and I think that previous knowledge really helped for this class. I can imagine struggling with some of the calculations if I haven't learned them in 14B yet.

My response is similar to the other reviews from spring 2020. I also wanted to add that his office hours are very very helpful! He is always more than willing to help with your questions about the lab.
