Professor Henary:
For this class you only really need the lab manual, a blue lab coat, goggles, and a lab notebook. The other things he mentions on the syllabus aren't necessary for doing well in the class. At first, Henary's accent can be a bit hard to understand, and his fast-paced lectures were hard to keep up with. But soon enough you get used to it all. I personally really liked how he taught. He did well in explaining things despite being short for time in just fifty minutes a week. And he also prints out copies of his slide for you to pick up before lecture and write notes in, which was quite nice. Sometimes he leaves blanks for you to fill in and he often skips to the next slide too soon, so just ask him to go back to the previous one or just take a picture of the slide beforehand.

TA Jonathan Shaw:
Jonathan was pretty serious. You can tell he knows what he's doing. I never sought his help outside of lab, which was once a week for a couple hours. He was kind of a tough grader on the labs, and I always got a couple or a few points off each lab. He didn't do much explaining of the concepts, only the procedural things in lab, which was fine I suppose.

Pre-Labs:
These had to be turned in before the start of lab each week. Henary would post the pre-lab writing guidelines on CCLE and you'd complete the work in your lab notebook. These mostly consisted of MSDS information, writing out the procedures, pre-lab questions, etcetera. Pretty basic stuff.

Lab Performance:
This is just basically an evaluation of your lab etiquette. I lost some points because I fucked up the procedure for a group lab we did. But besides that, these should be easy points.

Post-Labs:
These included an evaluation of your data and post-lab questions with data analysis and conclusions, among other things. I actually had a friend who gave me PDFs of their graded labs, so I used these mainly to work off of. Don't be too reliant on samples if you get them though. Try to understand it all on your own. And same with my pre-labs, I had a couple or few points knocked off each time.

Online CPR Writing Assignments Grade:
This was just a bunch of BS basically. It was an online assignment where we had to write explain what a titration is and include a bunch of points about indicators and whatnot within like 300 words. It was pretty difficult to hit all of the points in such a short essay. Basically, the timeline was that we had a week to enter our text, another week to evaluate three calibrations, another week to evaluate three other students' submissions and a self-assessment. In the evaluations, you had to rate the samples within a certain range of the professor's evaluation. And if you deviated too much from what he graded, you wouldn't get the points. I think I got around a B overall because my evaluations weren't up to par, even though I did very well on my own submission.

Midterm Grade: 52.5/60 87.50%
The midterm in-class with three questions of multiple parts. I thought it was very easy. My friend also gave me past midterms to look over, so that was very helpful. It's important that you pay attention to the conceptual or definitional things he talks about in lecture besides calculations. The average on the midterm was like 41/60 68.33%, so I did pretty well, aside from a couple stupid errors. Looking over the labs wouldn't be too helpful I think. Focus more on his lecture slides when studying.

Final:
I'm not sure what my grade was for the final, but I think I did pretty well on it. I was very confident leaving the final. Henary allows you to bring a 8.5x11 cheat sheet that you can write whatever on, front and back. I basically included everything from his slides. It was good review and it was especially helpful in the conceptual / fill in the blank questions on the final. The final was similarly formatted to the midterm, but with more questions. One question took me until close to the end to finally figure out, but overall, the test was very fair.

Overall Grade: A
Because so many people did badly on the midterm, Henary made two grading schemes: 60 points for the midterm and 140 points for the final, or 30 points for the midterm and 170 points for the final, both totaling 200 points. Overall, I think taking 14BL with Henary is a good call. I'd like to take him for 14CL too next quarter. I liked his teaching/grading style, and his exams weren't bad at all. I highly recommend.

I had Henary for both 14BL and 14CL. I had just taken 14B and 14C so a lot of the information was still fresh in my head. I think that he cares for his students and he allows students to ask questions many times in lecture. He actually recognized me and we had a conversation about 14BL. His lectures are understandable, but the problem is that he uses the same example over and over again. This doesn't prepare you well for the exams. The speed and explanations in lectures are good enough in my opinion. Also, he says that the class is NOT curved. Which really sucks because I do not think that is fair. The exams are too difficult to do well without a curve.

Before exams, he gives out practice problems. They are pretty helpful, but he doesn't give enough practice problems. As a result, many people get tripped up on the midterm and exam. I think that his exams are fair, but he needs to prepare us better for the exams by having more problems and different types of problems.

In 14BL, the average on the midterm was 75%. I got a 98% and I thought it was not difficult to do well on the midterm. His final was alright too. Final grade: A

In 14CL, the average on the midterm was 64%. This is really bad considering that he does not curve the class. I got a 94%. The final was pretty difficult and even though I studied a lot and I thought I was really prepared, I ended up not doing that great. It was really hard and 95% of the class stayed the entire 3 hours. Grade: A-

By the way, I got almost perfect scores on labs in both 14BL and 14CL. He does something called normalizing where he takes points away from the sections with the highest lab scores and he gives them to the sections with the lowest lab scores. I really don't like this. I think that scores should stay the way they are because rubrics already normalize scores.

Overall, 14BL and 14CL is doable with this professor but you'll have to study hard and make sure that you know the content thoroughly. Unfortunately, Henary doesn't give you all the tools you need to succeed. Good luck my fellow Bruins.

Dr. Henary is a phenomenal professor! I understand all of the comments about his accent and such, but frankly I didn't find his accent to be bothersome or incomprehensible at all. He is very clear and concise during lecture. And if you really didn't understand what he was saying, I highly recommend going and talking to him after class. He would be more than willing to help you. Otherwise, I truly respect Dr. Henary as a lecturer. You can tell that he loves what he is doing because he is always smiling during class. He is incredibly helpful, and does a fantastic job of making sure his students understand what he is teaching.

My TA, Yiliu, was just as amazing. He was always concerned about his student's understanding of the material. He did a fantastic job as a TA, and I learned just as much from his as I did from Dr. Henary.

The course itself is actually really fun. The pre-/post-labs are a bit tedious, but the labs themselves are really fun and exciting (If you're into that stuff I guess lol #kinkychemist). To succeed in the course I highly recmmoend UNDERSTANDING everything you write and read in your lab manual. This is critical because this course doesn't just revolve around calculations, but also concepts. I wouldn't recommend using someone else's previous labs however. I mean I guess you can use them as a reference to make sure you're doing everything correctly, but you should avoid using them solely as an answer key. Personally, I think that the students who did their lab reports on their own not only earned higher grades, but also understood the course material extensively (which is better for them because this stuff is going to end up on the MCAT).

Overall, I loved the course! Dr. Henary and Yiliu are both wonderful. The class isn't curved, but I don't think it has to be considering the normal averages.

Final Grade: A-

So, ngl: this guy sucks. I could understand his accent fine, but it's his English that sucks balls. I had him for BL and CL over summer and hated it. You'll want a good TA and to go to their office hours. I recommend: Kris Barr, Mark, Emma/Emily, Matt, Stephanie, Orin, Stephen.

His BL midterm was way easier than his CL one. For BL he doesn't ask you much about the labs themselves, but more about his notes and the math. There are some definitions and stuff. CL on the otherhand, you NEED to know the labs. He'll ask you random things about what chemical you used for which lab and why/what does it do.

He gives you "notes" that are full of typos, mistakes, and the exact same example in all of them. His office hours are useless. He doesn't know how to explain things and doesn't answer questions.

Also, he doesn't curve. He "NORMALIZES" your lab grade. The lab grade is worth more than your finals and midterms, but he'll drop your grade if you're doing above average and boost it if you're below. I went from getting an A to a flat out B because I had almost perfect scores in my lab. That kind of sucked.

If you can get ahold of labs, you'll be set.
Cram your cheat sheet front and back with a summary of your labs, basic steps, ect. His exam will be exceptions and tricky questions- not just basic things you've done. He might start in the middle of a titration and ask you something rather than what you've been doing at the start point. He might give you a triprotic instead of diprotic.

I worked hard in the class and got a B in both classes. CL was harder than BL in my opinion.
Take the class with Chang if you can.
