I stopped going to lectures after going once because of his thick accent but I still ended with an A so it's definitely doable. This class is basically 14b+14c material (titration and mixed spec heavy) so if that material is fresh in your mind this class will be easy. The annoying part of lab is how unreliable post-lab instructions are. You WILL get docked off points if you blindly follow the instructions. It turns out that the prof actually goes over specific points he wants in your post-labs which is dumb.

There is too much work in this class for a four unit course. I did several more hours of work for this class than any of my five unit courses. The TA's grading keys for the pre-labs and post-labs have criteria that isn't listed on the assignment sheet and we were docked points nearly every week for not answering an unasked question. The TA's also didn't get the keys until a couple days before the assignments are due, so it was hard to get help on assignments.

If you have no choice but to take this class with Henary, here's my advice/warnings. Do the pre labs and post labs on your computer before handwriting them so you can fix your mistakes. Avoid having a lab section before the lecture of the week if at all possible. Each pre lab and post lab usually took me about 90 minutes on average. The keys for the pre-labs and post-labs that the TA's use to grade have criteria that isn't listed in the assignment, which is bullshit, but can't really be avoided so be super thorough and go to office hours on a day right before they're due to see if there's anything you should add. For exam practice problems, often they're unanswerable with the information given, and part of answer keys are just straight up wrong, so don't waste your time if you feel like there's no answer (you're probably right).

I will say that I messed up and was over an hour late to the final, and Henary was a total G about it and let me take it for the full exam time anyway. He's not a bad guy, just wasn't a great professor IMO.

Henary is just not a great professor. lectures are really unclear as are what is expected of us for exams. VERY tedious and a lot of busy work. he gives practice exams but the answer keys have so many typos that are confusing and that don't actually help you learn. get Jeffrey as a lab TA if you can because he was cool and understanding with how unclear and disorganized Henary was. UCLA really needs to find a new prof for this class and it needs an upgrade

Dr. Henary really wants to help his students. He goes very quickly through his lectures and does not provide practice problems for every concept studied which makes it difficult to do as well on the exams.

This class is the definition of torture. Lectures were very confusing and extremely fast paced. Henary goes through 40 to 50 dense slides in 50 minutes. The workload is the worst part of this class, since the labs are two 3 hour-long sessions a week. My TA wasn't the most helpful so it was just three hours of being confused, trying to keep up with everyone else, and hoping that the experiment worked. At least sometimes we were let out early. The pre-labs and post-labs take an extremely long time to write. Sometimes the TA's in office hours were confused on how to do the pre-labs and post-labs. The midterm and final were quite difficult and had a lot of very specific questions about the labs. Overall, this class was not enjoyable, but I was able to make it through.

One of the worst professors to take at ucla. Please do yourself a favor and take any other Professor for chem 14bl or cl. The exams are ridiculously long as they are 15 pages in length for only 4-6 questions. Not only are they long, but for the midterm and the final, their were several typos and mixed up numbers which made it even more stressful. Not clear during lecture, explains things too fast, and gets mad when you don’t answer his questions quickly. Very rude in office hours and clearly has favorites. On the final, he asked questions that we never went over in class. Again, please save yourself the stress and trouble and take anyone else, you will be doing yourself a big favor. This is coming from a student who took it online, god only knows how much worse it will be in person.

The lab reports in this class were extremely tedious, but as long as you get a relatively easy TA you will be fine! My TA was super understanding too and allowed extensions on report deadlines without penalty. I highly recommend taking this class online while you still can; it saves a lot of time that would usually be spent in lab since sections were always about 30 minutes. I never attended live lectures, but looked over the slides to study for exams. Although Henary claims that exams should not take longer than a few hours, expect to spend the entire allotted time completing the midterm and final. The questions asked were fair game and reasonable in terms of difficulty. Definitely review example problems from lecture slides and understand the lab techniques for exams. The final was harder than the midterm in my opinion, but both are do-able.
