Quarter: Summer 2017
Grade: A
Nov. 15, 2017

Look, I'll tell it like it is. Henary was a bad teacher.

First, I couldn't understand his accent. The entire summer session, I couldn't understand a thing he said. He also mumbles and speaks very quietly with strange intonations. Once during office hours, he was talking about "pi", but he pronounced it as "bi." So I asked, "bi?" Then he looked annoyed and reemphasized "PI." Anyway, you can't read his handwriting either. He does have slides, but without an explanation, you have to figure things out by yourself.

I went to his office hours to clarify concepts, and when I didn't know something, he asked, "Did you attend my lecture? Did you take Chem 14C?" Yes and yes, obviously. First off, some of the concepts in 14CL are NOT covered in 14C. And second, as a teacher, it's his responsibility to help his students without judgement. He was definitely standoffish and a bit demeaning. Even if you're not dumb, he can make you feel dumb. I went to his office hours once and never went back. Went to my TA instead. Wonderful guy.

His midterm was fine. His final was challenging, but doable. With all the labs and everything, it's not hard to get an A. He just makes it tedious for you to get that A, having to learning things by yourself and whatnot. Long story short, avoid taking him if you can. If not, it's not the end of the world; you'll be fine.

He's a bit hard to understand but make sure you go to class because his slides are helpful for quizzes and he tells you exactly what to expect on the exam! The class is very tedious but doable if you stay on top of things.

Quarter: Fall 2016
Grade: B+
Dec. 15, 2016

Grading Scheme:
Pre-labs = 108 points
Lab performance = 56 points
Post-labs = 212 points
CPR = 20 points
Midterm = 70 points
Final = 160 points
Total = 626 points

Professor Henary:
I had Henary for 14BL and I got an A in that class. I took BL a while before CL, and Henary expects you to remember everything from BL, which I think was my folly. A lot of the points for this class are in lab work, but I messed up in the exams. I kind of neglected this class overall, but I've made my peace. Henary is an okay professor. I actually really liked him in BL, but for some reason not so much in CL. His accent is easy to get through after a while, but he goes really quickly in lecture so it's hard to keep up sometimes. Overall I think he's generally pretty fair. However, he does bring some things up in exams that weren't explicitly gone over in class.

TA Wenfei Li:
Wenfei was a wonderful TA. It was her first time TAing for CL, so she was a bit frazzled on the first day and really hard on herself. But in the end she was a very kind and caring TA. She really wanted everyone to do well in labs. She is very sweet and was a wonderful supervisor for our labs.

Pre-labs/lab performance/post-labs:
It definitely seemed like there were more pre- and post-labs in CL than BL. However, the due dates for everything are spaced out enough to be manageable. But basically every lab session there was something due. Experiments in CL were also pretty easy. If you worked efficiently you could finish pretty early quite often.

CPR Grade: 83.8%
So if you had Henary for BL you probably had to do CPR also. It's kind of a waste of time, but hey. The assignment is online and involves using source materials provided to write a short essay about whatever topic they give you while addressing all the points they want you to make. After you submit your text entry, you do calibrations where you read three sample essays and grade them. You get credit based on whether or not you deviate too much from the expected grade. Then you grade three classmates' essays and self-grade your own. Each of these parts are separated, and each is due a week after the last part. Your score is a weighted average of other people's grades for your essay, how well you mastered the calibrations and review of other students' work, and how much you deviate with your self-assessment from your given score. It's kind of all bs. I recommend finding someone's essay online and using it as a guide for your text entry.

Midterm Grade: 50.5/70
So I didn't study for the midterm until the night before, which was totally my fault. I got 0.5 points below the average, and since this class isn't curved, it wasn't good news for me. It'd be really good to look at past exams if you can, because he repeats the same types of questions. But try to really know your stuff early.

Final:
Henary lets you use a cheat sheet on the final, a regular sheet of paper front and back with handwritten notes. Write down the points he makes in lecture about the different experiments done in class, because he asks a lot of recall questions about materials used and procedures and whatnot. Just fit as much as you can. I thought the final was a little more manageable than the midterm, because I studied a little better for it. I don't know my final grade, but it wasn't enough to save me from a B+.

Overall Grade: B+
CL was a little more challenging than I expected with Henary than I expected. However, I have to admit that most of the blame goes onto me for not giving this class enough attention. Just goes to show that while the lab reports are important points-wise, don't neglect the exams too. Honestly, if you study the material consistently throughout the quarter, unlike me, you should do fine.

Henary was by far the worst professor I have ever had during my four years at UCLA. The only reason I did so well in this class is because I had a stellar TA who helped us greatly. If this class relied on Henary alone, I would've failed.
Henary is extremely rude and couldn't care less about his students. He talks in a high pitch, nasally voice, rushing through all of the materials. His lectures are very unclear, dry, and unrelated to his tests. His questions on the final and midterm were completely unrelated to anything we learned.
The fact I got out of this class with an A- shows that I'm not just giving Henary a bad review because I'm bitter about a bad grade. I'm rating him truthfully; he's a horrible professor and I strongly advise anyone against taking a class with him, unless you want to take a leap of faith and pray you get a great TA like I did.

wonderful professor and very FAIR. i had him for both BL and CL. His final for 14CL was more challenging than BL. Questions are doable however you have to pace yourself and work efficiently. i thought that the most challenging part of the final was coming up with the molecular structure so practice before the final. I highly recommend him!

I expected 14CL would be challenging, but it was much better than I anticipated. Sure there's double the prelabs and postlabs, but like Dr. Henary says he "makes it easy for you." The due dates are evenly spaced. He's generally very helpful in office hours, but often times he dismisses your question because its so easy to him. You just need to press him more, and he will explain. The midterm was tough, and time was definitely a crunch. The final was incredibly challenging. the final was 30 pages including the 1 page IR table at the back. Literally a book. Play your strengths, review your weaknesses. The questions dont really change midterm to final, he just asks you to apply the same concept in a different way. Work quickly, and remember that the final is only 25% of the grade. Overall, Dr. Henary is a boss, and he's way better than my BL professor, who was fired the quarter after i took BL.

Worst instructor I've had in my life. Lectures are not helpful at all and I found myself trying to learn new material on my own because he was no help. Extremely rude in person and gives off a very bad vibe. Tests are hard. Labs and lab reports aren't that bad. Material includes stuff we were not taught in 14C so be prepared for that. We are allowed a cheat sheet on the final but, personally, it was not very helpful. I strongly recommend not taking this professor.
