Overall, Dr. Henary is a good professor.
The bad thing about him is that he has a very heavy
accent which may make it difficult to understand during lecture. If you can understand the lecture handouts, then you do not really need to pay attention during lecture.
In terms of class difficulty, his exams are VERY FAIR (compared to pangs). Both his midterm and final were very problem solving oriented with some short answers. (65% calculations: 35% short answer).
He also provides many handouts with problems on VOH, practice midterms, and practice finals before exams. If you can do all of this, you should score about 80% on all his exams.
For the final, you get a 8x11 cheat sheet front and back and can put anything; it doesn't really help much because most of the final exam is problem solving. Be aware that the final for my class was 18 pages.
In terms of the curve, our midterm ave. was 69% and he didn't tell us the final ave. I don't think the class is curved, both exams only make up about 35% of your grade and the rest is from lab. I ended up with an A, which was exactly what I calculated it to be.
Henary is super nice! And really cares about student learning. Don't know where the negative reviews come from. It's a chem lab, so of course the subject itself won't be super enjoyable, but Henary is really helpful in office hours and doesn't condescend to students like other professors can do sometimes. The class notes are pretty identical to Pang and his tests aren't easy but they're not impossible if the time is put in studying.
I took Chem 14CL with Henary.
You probably won't have much of a choice when it comes to lab professor, but I can at least tell you what to expect.
First, Lab TAs are still as important as ever in this class. He says he "normalizes" the section grades due to different grading styles, but from what I've seen, this is a pretty shotty correction. Good luck with your TA, because lab scores are a very large part of the grade.
Second, lectures are... skippable. Honestly, as long as you get the lecture slides, you're in pretty good shape. 8AM class meant I'd probably spend it sleeping, but on the rare morning when I was awake enough to listen, I was too baffled by the man's accent. It gets easier to understand over time, of course, but I found it pretty frustrating. He tries to teach the lab concepts, but I never found him very effective. He's not a bad lecturer, but it was all just pretty ordinary and at a slightly fast pace. I think I attended two lectures.
Tests are on the harder side, yet manageable. The midterm gives you only 50 minutes. If you were given any less time, you'd have a lot of trouble finishing it. Work hard and work fast, and check if you have time. You need to practice the long problems like titrations so they can be completed quickly and efficiently. Many students did not finish the entire midterm.
The final was easier because of the extra third hour. However, the test was still exceedingly long and I saw only one student turn the test in before time was up.
Overall, I didn't mind Henary. My only problem came from when I found an error on his final, but rather than trying to resolve the issue, he told me that even though the problem was flawed, I should have just followed instructions and not questioned it. That's a real thought-stifling attitude that I don't agree with. Regardless, I still got an A in the class. Best wishes.
I hope Dr. Henary reads these reviews because he needs a reality check.
First of all -- when I took this class, he guaranteed that one of his sections would get extra points added to their grade because the T.A. was a difficult grader. Low and behold, he did not give use NEARLY as many points as was necessary to standardize our T.A section's grades with the rest of the class. It is an absolute shame and a disgrace to any student who works hard. The T.A., Selma, is quite awful. She took off many points for NO reason from our labs. There is NOTHING wrong with fair, honest grading. I support that system. However, she made up her own grading rubric for half of our labs, when in fact she's supposed to follow the professor's grading rubric. Furthermore, if one T.A. takes off many points from his or her section, THEN EVERYONE IN THAT SECTION SHOULD HAVE A NORMALIZED GRADE. Despite what this professor thinks, he did not normalize the grades adequately.
Furthermore, Selma took off lab technique points off of everyone's grade in our T.A. section. It would be difficult for me to say why... She doesn't understand how to grade, unfortunately. Hopefully she will learn though; She's a big girl now.
Took this professor for 14CL. He really is a horrible professor, and was EXTREMELY rude to me when I emailed him asking the grade I received on my final exam. He told me I should have gotten an F in the class, but he gave me a C anyways. How is this a teacher? I got As on all the labs, never missed a class. I did well on the CPRs. I definitely struggled on the exams, but did not deserve an F. The final exam and midterm are only worth 33% of your grade. So even if I flunked these (which I didn't), I should NOT get an F if I do well on the labs (which I did). I hear he hates pre-meds ... so maybe he though I was one (I'm not), but there was really no reason for him to be rude to me. All I asked was for my final exam grade. This is the reason why I hate so many professors at UCLA.
Besides that, he really isn't a good lecturer. He just reads off his slides. Really boring to listen to and a little hard to concentrate in lecture because of his accent, although you do get used to it after a while. His tests really aren't that bad although I didn't do great on them because I had a lot of personal issues (family related) the quarter I took him, and just didn't study at all. But I did do all the labs. Got 100% on most of them. Did fine on the CPRs. Got 42%s on the midterm and the final exam. Apparently this warrants an F in the class. But I received a C. So if you take this professor, don't assume working hard in lab will get you far. You need to do well on his tests. This class is NOT CURVED. Which sucks because ALL CHEM CLASSES SHOULD BE CURVED, esp when the test averages are low.
