Makela was an amazing Spanish teacher. Her Spanish class was the second Spanish class I took at UCLA, and she made it very clear what was expected of each student. At first I found her to be extremely intimidating, but as I grew more comfortable with the class, she was much more welcoming. Be prepared for a lot of homework every night, but it's not at all unbearable. She's always extremely willing to help you out with anything, especially in office hours. I found the quizzes to be the hardest part of the class. In the end, I was not exactly pleasantly surprised by my grade, but I know I should have worked harder as finals rolled around. Take this class with Makela - I'm taking another one with her next quarter.

Brizuela is the most excellent teacher I've had at UCLA! Yeah she is strict and yeah she demands allot but in the end she does it because she really cares about her students learning! She doesn\355t want her students to just take the class to get it done, she is truly concerned with each students understanding of the material. Email is the best way to contact her. Over all, Brizuela is one of those challenging teachers that you just LOVE because she challenges you to grow as a student. Not an easy class but a Worth While class! I consider the material learned in her class valuable for a life time.

Professor Brizuela is really good at explaining what she expects from every student. Many students consider her as a hard professor, but she is not hard as long as you do all the work. Sometimes the homework might seem overwhelming, but it is really helpful in that it prepares you for the tests. The test are very similar to the homework. Also, Professor Brizuela is very helpful because before a test she gives out a review handout as homework and if you do that, then you will be prepared for the tests. I took Spanish 27 and 107 with Brizuela and I really improved my writing skills. Throughout the quarter there are about 4 essays. She always gives out a guide and is really straight forward in what she expects from you. A lot of students complain about her grading, but I honestly think that she is fair. As long as you correct all the mistakes and pay attention to her comments you will earn a decent grade. In both the classes I took, my lowest grade on one of the essays was a B+. Also, she gives enough time to write a rough draft and then the final version. Sometimes she might even give an extension. Her grading is not too hard because your overall grade consists of essays, tests, participation(being in class on time, doing homework, and speaking in class), final(in class essay) and other categories. She also gives extra credit. I really recommend Brizuela because she will prapare for upper division Spanish classes, especially the ones that involve writing. I worked hard, I did all my work and just listened to her comments and I was able to earn an A both in spanish 27 and 107. Also, she is really friendly.
