I really don't know why y'all are shitting on my boy. Marengon truly wants to make sure you get the material and will make sure to answer your questions. All of his examples are straight from the textbook, which some people don't like, but he will thoroughly explain each of them in a way that makes sense. Because of this, you can teach yourself, but I would not recommend skipping class though, especially if you have not taken Calc BC in high school because it can get pretty confusing. This course is hard in general, which is why I don't think some people are being fair to this professor. However, or the very confusing topics, like error bound, he did not make sense at all, so make sure you are going to office hours or getting extra help for that topic! Overall though, Marengon is a very funny professor and I enjoyed taking his class. You only have 10 required math problems to do every week, but do the extra practice given because it will help on the midterms!!!! Some of the problems were taken from the homework, and Marengon offers a lot of practice tests. The midterms and finals are very fair, not like other classes where the difficulty is completely unexpected and impossible to do. As long as you are doing the homework and going to class, you will do well in his class.

If you get the chance to do Peer Learning sessions from AAP, please do it for this class! Natalie is AMAZING and gives you extra help during sessions.

I enjoyed this class. Full disclosure, I am not usually very good at math classes; that being said, I though Professor Marengon did a great job. I saw all the reviews about how he wasn't clear and I was scared going into his class. I think that if you put in the work necessary you'll be fine. He also bruincasted the class this quarter, which was really helpful! I am not particularly happy with my grade because I know I could have done better, but this wasn't really an ideal situation. Professor Marengon usually curves the class to offset the difficulty of the midterms/final, but this quarter it seems he chose not to due to a student posting one of the answers on the final to Chegg. It's extremely unfortunate considering that our midterm medians were in the 60s and 50s respectively, and this hurt a lot of people's final grades. Nonetheless, it was a bad situation and he's still a good professor and you can definitely do well in his class. This is coming from someone who historically is NOT GOOD AT MATH. I was doing quite well in the class (compared to medians) until the whole pandemic.

Also my TA was amazing (Joe Breen). Really recommend choosing a discussion with him if possible, he was super helpful.

31B isn't that hard as a class, and Prof. Marengon explains it super well!!
He's super funny, engaging and he's genuinely interesting. I know that's a stretch for math, but this might be one of my favourite math classes. There's homework once a week, and he gives a TON of practice midterms and finals that act as more or less perfect examples for what to expect. It's a good class :)

Also: special thanks to the TA Joe Breen he's freaking fantastic!! if you can get him please do otherwise find some good final review sessions from him on his youtube channel (courtesy to the shift to online finals) and some good review / problems on his website.

I felt uneasy starting his class after reading his Bruinwalk reviews, but Marengon is a good professor. I feel like a majority of the low ratings are probably because 31B is generally just a difficult class. Marengon is clear with his lectures and gives many opportunities for students to ask questions if they need more clarification. You can tell he cares about students and their learning. Lectures were even Bruincasted this quarter. He lets you choose between two grading schemes so if you do super badly on one midterm, you can just make the final worth more. Homework was really light, usually about 10 purely computational problems. I didn't think the exams were that bad, but our midterm averages, 65%ish, were surprisingly low. Exam questions were very straightforward and purely computational. He sent out practice exams every time and I felt that doing those were really helpful. His exams are very similar to his practice ones. Also, Marengon is kinda funny in an endearing way so lectures aren't totally boring.

Quarter: Spring 2020

It was an overall mediocre experience, all things considered. Marco was very lenient and understanding with his policies. Several HW assignments were waived in light of COVID and the BLM movement, and all the exams were 24-hour take-home exams. The material was somewhat interesting, and none of the exam or homework material was excessively difficult. That being said, it's not a class I would take again.

This class was definitely tough for me. I took 31A last quarter and took AP ABCalc in high school so I should have been prepared. Marco is just not the best professor. His lectures were confusing and not super helpful. He's incredibly awkward which is kind of adorable though.

Wow the midterm averages were at 50-60 and he really had the audacity to not curve the final grade because people were cheating on finals or something. I got 87/100 on the final and i still get B- as the final grade? I understand that perhaps everyone did very good on final and got As and Bs but it's ridiculous that i'd get B+ on the final and get a worse final grade. my midterm grade was above average too.

He’s a super nice and humble guy, always very patient with answering questions and likes to ask the class if we’re getting what he’s teaching. Homework is also pretty light, about 10 questions a week. I feel like a lot of people give him a tough time bc of his accent which is totally unfair, yes his tests are quite hard but they're not that far off from the practice midterms/finals he gave.
