I LOVED THIS CLASS LIKE NO OTHER. Marco and TA Jamie were my favorite teachers the whole quarter. I walked in to New Genres as an art major, just assuming I'd be taking this class as just another lower div that I wasn't really invested in. I didn't even know what "New Genres" meant. The first day we had class though, I was completely blown away. Marco is SO kind and wonderful. He really cares about his students and made such an effort to get to know us all and cheer us along as we tackled a new medium. All the group mini projects, although they felt tedious at times, ended up being great ways for all us classmates to connect with each other. The videos Marco showed during class truly changed my life and I will never forget them. Having never made video art before, I felt that the video projects were really interesting and exciting. The prompts were really cool and thought provoking, and I really appreciated the welcoming and contemplative energy Marco and Jamie fostered during critique. We all had such a good time encouraging each other to pursue video and performance art. Overall Marco made me feel so nurtured and appreciated as a student and as an artist, and I hope to keep in touch with him and Jamie in the years to come. I feel so lucky and honored to have taken this class with him as my professor, I loved it so much. Wish I could take it again and again.

Quarter: Fall 2017
Grade: A

This is a great class for people who are new and experienced with video. He's a very lenient professor, so if you have an interesting idea, he'll probably let you go through with it. We only had 3 projects to do. One was a portrait of yourself/a space, performance art, and the last one was whatever you wanted. These prompts may seem pretty strict at first, but they're really open to your interpretations. As for assignments, every week you send a paragraph worth of response to the professor and TA on a movie, short clip, or anything we watched in class. Overall, it's pretty lenient. He's very chill and easy to talk to. Also, you watch a lot of interesting movies in class, but the room is cold, so you kind of fall asleep sometimes. A bad side to this class is that you learn more about video concepts, rather than practical skills in editing/filming videos. ANYWAYS, I really recommend this class!!
