Winter 2018 - Professor Hunter is amazing and the class is very fun but Please be Aware of your TA as they control your grades. You don't have to believe me as the reviews make this class seem like the easiest class ever for an A but it really does depend on the TA. Grades are dependent on two essays (about 6-8 pages) for the midterm and final and a video project that you do with your fellow classmates. However, I still highly recommend this class as Professor Hunter is genuinely an amazing person and professor and the workload is very small. Just, in my recommendation, please allow your schedule to be somewhat flexible so you can change TAs if you find one to be absolute dogshit. And yes I am salty lol. #ripmy3.7

Winter 2024 - This class was so fun! I rarely missed as the topics discussed were very interesting. He would talk about Africa, and African-American history with coalitions and movements such as The Black Panthers. There were some readings, a group project, and two essays but it was very manageable and fun. We incorporated a lot of artistic work like haikus and a video for the group project. Professor Hunter is awesome!

Winter 2015 - Professor Marcus Hunter is great! Special Topics 180A is Urban America and this is one of my favorite classes that I've taken at UCLA. Professor Hunter is extremely engaging. His lectures are interesting, insightful, and fun. He encourages participation during lectures and sets up group discussions during every lecture where we get to discuss the current topics we are learning about with one another. I really enjoyed this class because it was very interesting and it gave me a better understanding as to why Urban American is the way it is today. Professor Hunter really breaks down and explains the different systemic forces that create the society we live in now and how they affect America today. This is a must take class if it is offered! Professor Hunter is probably one of my favorite professors. He lectures with great clarity and passion. He plays jazz, motown, and hip hop music and brings it back to course topics. I really like how he relates the things we learn in class to things that are happening in America today. No tests. Just two papers, and five discussion summaries! Very do-able! :)
