I have read a lot of bad reviews about this professor, and yes she is a little straight forward, but I do not understand what the complaints are about. She truly wants us to be successful, and what more could you hope for from an internship professor. Students who complain need to grow up. In the real world no one is going to spoon feed you and be super sweet all the time. It is actually annoying to hear that she gets so many complaints, I wish students here could handle tough love a little better. Every class we have had top notch presenters who work in the industry. I thought that they were all so insightful, even if they weren't in the field I want to be in, they still had inspiring stories and had great general advice. How anyone could complain about the opportunity to hear such outstanding guests beats me.

Marde Gregory is a horrible, self-important, egocentric, deluded woman with a God complex. She is single handedly the most unpleasant person I have ever had the great misfortune of dealing with, not only at UCLA, but throughout the course of my life. She relishes the opportunity to belittle and publicly humiliate her students and has zero respect for them, especially if they dare disagree with any of her opinions, of which she has many and never hesitates to shove them down your throat.

If you absolutely must take 185 to get internship credit, go on the first day to get your necessary paperwork, and don't come back until the last day when you have to turn in your final paper. She tries to tell you that attendance is mandatory, as well as a meeting with her during office hours, but it's not true. She makes no effort to know who you are and won't even bother asking your name if you dare go to her office hours.

She has this notion that the communications industry only includes the film and television fields, so she will probably try to deny your access to the class if you are so stupid as to try and take a Communications internship class for a ridiculous field like journalism. Don't let her do that. I had to fight for one of her precious class contracts after she tried multiple times to ignore me, but I got one and turned in my paper at the end for an easy 2 units.

If you sign up for 185 to try and get an internship, please look into alternatives. I have had multiple internships without her help and I have a hard time thinking this woman is really the be all and end all of the communications industry. If this is true, I have no faith in humanity.

I'm sure she is knowledgable and I'm sure she knows many influential people in the field, but you got into this school without her help, and you'll make it out into the world just fine without her help as well.

Some people say they like her, and I really question those people's integrities. If you like being emotionally abused and enjoy vying for approval and affection from such a twisted woman, go ahead and take every class with her that you can.

WOW! Many of you have totally missed the mark about Marde Gregory. I'm from the class of 1985 and credit Marde Gregory for being a critical part of my career success in
the field of communication. She was a key factor in helping me get jobs at CBS-TV, KNX Radio, Glamour Magazine and Harper's Bazaar Magazine. I suggest you look at the big picture and realize that jobs in Media are filled with creative people. You never know who you'll meet and how important they are. Marde Gregory is one of those people. Networking is key in most fields, so please don't count anyone out because they're a bit different. Professors, bosses, co-workers...thank your lucky stars for everyone that passes your way. I did not realize how important Marde Gregory would be in my life. Without Marde, I would not have had such a great time at UCLA and a full scholarship to graduate school in England. Bottom line--you never know who will be important in your life. Start with every UCLA Professor. You were smart enough to get into UCLA and the great Communications Department...now show them what you've got!! Donna Rose Houchen

Gregory is BY FAR the WORST professor I have ever had. After one day in her internship class, she kicked me out because I was "clearly too young to have learned anything yet," and the fact that I was upset with her saying this indicated that I wasn't "ready to take a job in the cut-throat entertainment industry." She did not even give me a chance to tell her about myself. Once she found out my age (18 at the time, but senior standing) she immediately made judgments about my intelligence. She thinks she needs to turn everyone into heartless crazies just to succeed in the entertainment industry, but in all honesty, I don't know why anyone would want to end up like her. To all the comm majors out there: you do NOT have to be ruthless and hateful to get places in the entertainment industry. Sometimes a smile and some honesty are far more helpful in opening up opportunities.

Prof. Gregory may care about your career, but that doesn't change the fact that she is completely incompetent. She does not understand email. Seriously- it's not that she ignores students, it's that she honestly doesn't know how email works. So how someone like that can help you find a career in communication technology, regardless of whether or not she wants to, boggles my mind.

I've heard the poli sci department has an internship class you can take for a letter grade that actually counts towards a minor or double major in that department.

I'll agree that this professor might be a bit "difficult" but for some odd reason I feel compelled to proclaim the importance of taking 185 with Marde. This is probably because I can honestly say that she is the only professor I've had who truly cares about your career success. Yes, she's kinda mean but if you listen to her life story you'll realize she does it because she actually truly cares.

She is pretty intimidating at first which makes you want to drop the class immediately. She has a very different style of lecturing that is very slow, dramatic, and tends to digress a lot. If you stick with her though, you'll realize that she's not as bad as she seems - kind of cute and funny actually.

Especially with this class where she only is there for you to learn, she will answer any of your questions about actual careers that are available to Comm majors. She seems to have connections everywhere and knows just about everyone or at least can name almost every noteable person in the field. This class helped me a TON to know more real-life knowledge about careers as a TV and movie producer, agent, writer, and manager. Also, since she knows a lot of people, she has a lot of hookups to internships in any field that you can want. Take the class and actually show up because it's worth your while!

I have never rated a professor so poorly here at UCLA. She is truly horrible. Basically, all of the above is very true about her. I feel that going to class was such a waste because how she talks is frustrating. Lastly, I don't care who you think you are but it is exteremely in appropriate for the professor to arrive 20 minutes late--repeatedly.

ABSOLUTELY AWFUL!!! She is probably the most ARROGANT person I have ever met. She thinks that the only way anyone can ever be successful in the world is if they follow her every suggestion and get every job through her. She doesn't know how to talk (ie: Uh, well, um, we can, uh, uhm, hmm, uh) It takes her about half an hour to get out one sentence. Her speakers were okay, but the fact that she is even in the same classroom made me want to leave. Comm 185 isn't hard to pass, but avoid any of her other classes!

Sorry kids. I don't get what you see in this lady. She's disorganized and frankly a little creepy. For students have more to do in their lives than figure out Marde's "mystique" or whatever you call it, save yourself the trouble and look for a sponsor somewhere else. Guest speakers are amazing though.
