Quarter: Winter 2017

If you have the option not to take this class take this option immediately. This class is the hardest class I have ever taken and many of my friends either dropped or failed. I honestly don't know how I passed this class, but if there was one positive of this class it was that I became an integration master. Even still, this class will wreck your GPA unless you are a math major or some form of engineer. Basically, if you are any form of physical science or bus/econ major you're screwed. Avoid this class at all costs, but if you can pass it then anything is possible in your college career.

If 31B is an insignificant prereq for your major, I would advise trying to avoid taking Biskup's class, but not for any other reason than the fact that it's difficult. Of course, if you're like me and have no choice but to take this class because of an unlucky enrollment time, just know that it's not impossible to do well.
I think Biskup is a decent lecturer, though I wish he'd done more examples that are similar to the homework problems during class. A little too fast-paced and proof-based for me, but overall I was able to get an okay understanding of general concepts by attending lecture.
The homework is notoriously hard and in my opinion, some of the questions were unnecessarily difficult. Each assignment probably took me 5+ hours to finish on average. Office hours are pretty much a necessity for completion of the homework unless you're some sort of math god, so go to as many as you can. There were a ton of TA office hours available throughout the week which was great. Biskup's office hours were helpful as well, but you aren't allowed to take notes.
There are three midterms in addition to the final. Honestly, I didn't do that well on any of the tests, but personally thought they were very fair. They're based almost entirely on the homework, so if you actually do and understand the homework, you should be fine. One important thing that you should note about the tests is that each question is only worth three points. You get 1 point if your work shows that you're headed in the right direction, 2 if you have the correct work, or 3 if you have the correct work and the correct answer. Missing one simple step can cost you one whole point out of not a lot of points, so just be careful.
With all that said, Biskup is a nice guy and genuinely cares about your understanding of the material. I do think I would've enjoyed this class more if I had the luxury of devoting more of my time to it, but I feel like I learned a lot regardless. If you do end up having to take this class, good luck, it's a tough one. But if you put in enough effort to do and understand the homework, you'll be okay. The curve should help a good bit as well.

Would not advise taking this class if you care about your GPA/other classes/sanity. I do believe that Biskup wants his students to actually understand math but this class is unreasonable. Often times in lecture he does a proof opposed to examples that would help to better understand the homework. You have to attend office hours at least twice a week but they are packed and you can't takes notes. Homework takes FOREVER and I do believe this class took away from my other classes. He is kinda funny and overall a good person but it's a love hate relationship when you have to devote your life to this class. Avoid unless you are math genius/have hours to decorate. Rip my gpa

Honesty time: Biskup is not the best professor. BUT, he does seem to care about students actually learning the math instead of just being able to solve questions with a surface-level understanding of the topics. His lectures weren't particularly engaging- for me, because I thought he digresses and talks about things that don't seem too important for the level of this class- although if you care about the math, you will find the lectures interesting. Almost all the learning you will do in this class will be through your TA's office hours/discussion, the textbook (highly recommend just to understand the concepts, because I never did Taylor Polynomials before 31B and I was lost before I read the textbook which made things a lot clearer) and your frenzied googling at 1 am when you're trying to finish the hw due in class the next day (not that google is too helpful- the online calculators help but you'll find very, very few of his hw problems online). Your entire grade depends on the homework problems because most of the midterms and final questions this quarter were either direct or slightly modified hw questions. Basically, it's not impossible to get a good grade. You need to give it time and do everything you can to be as prepared as you can be. Passing this class isn't about being a genius; it's about being an organized student with an interest in understanding math on a deeper level. And study groups/group chats help.

Honestly, turn back now while you still can. Biskup is hands down the worst professor or teaching professional I have ever encountered. You're probably sitting here going it'll be ok, I can teach myself math. STOP, YOU ARE WRONG. This class is unnecessarily challenging and by the end of the quarter the class was down to 89 students. His problems take hours to complete and hints you will almost never come up with on your own, this class is not worth wrecking your sanity or GPA.

Unless you already know the material being covered avoid this man at all costs. Biskup knows his material, but has trouble explaining it to students who are not already masters of mathematics. TAs and other math professors have trouble solving the homework problems you are given every week because of their difficulty. Office hours are basically mandatory in order to pass.

If you are reading this because you just enrolled and are checking the damage report good luck.

Biskup's a fookin savage m8. Be ready to work you tits off. This is a haaaaaard class. Be ready to sacrifice your quarter to the god of mathematics in this class. Go to office hours, go to SMC and get the HW done. Then, learn all the HW problems (learn all the scenarios and how to solve them). before every midterm. Do not take other hard/time consuming classes at the same time as this class, you will not survive m8, Overall funny guy and an absolute savage. Always has a smile on his face as he mentions new homework (dread m8, dread. his homework is absolutely crazy. )

A good professor if you want to learn mathmatics but not good if you want a good grade. His homeworks are extremely doable if you attend office hours and put in the hours.

Overall I enjoyed his class but barely managed a B.

Biskup proves that easier isn't always better. Expect to work hard, but learn Calculus like a pro. He knows what he's doing and is extremely competent, but doesn't pull punches when it comes to homework and tests. He also coordinates with his TAs really well, so there are always office hours to go to throughout the week. That, combined with your discussion session and maybe a partner or two to work with will get you through his classes without a problem.
