I'm really glad I waited to take this class with Quinlan rather than Scerri or Lavelle. There were a lot of different ways to get points in the class (online homework, written homework, quizzes, participation, midterm, final, etc.) so no one thing was worth too much. Her tests were extremely fair if you did the homework and listened in lecture, and what's more, I actually feel like I learned something. I would 100% take this class again, Professor Quinlan is so helpful during office hours and is all around great at explaining concepts.
I'm going to be completely honest, so far half way into the quarter, Quinlan has been unorganized and unclear. This really showed when she gave out a half baked confusing quiz with contradicting information that tripped up most if not all of the class.
If you're debating between taking Scerri or Quinlan for 14B, take Quinlan!! A lot of people were debating between the two last quarter because Quinlan is fairly new and because the first clicker of each class is graded on accuracy, but she is super flexible/understanding and teaches well. Her exams were really easy this quarter (pretty much exactly like the problem sets we get each week) and the clicker thing didn't even end up being that big of a deal. I had Scerri for 14A last quarter and I can say that Quinlan goes more in depth with the material and explains the concepts better. The one drawback is that she confuses herself during lectures often. I also saw a previous review talking about how she gave a confusing and contradictory quiz, which did happen, but she ended up dropping the grade for that quiz and hosting a review session to go over it. Overall, would definitely recommend to take her!
Dr. Quinlan is an awesome professor! She really listens to her students and really goes out of her way to help. We are given a problem set every week and have a week to complete it. 80% of it is just completion and 20% is based on the accuracy of a random graded problem. Her exams are very fair and closely follow the concepts that we learn in class. Reviewing the slides, problem sets and quizzes was enough for me for the exams. She was very flexible and really supportive of the class. I highly recommend her class.
Take this class with Quinlan! There are a lot of categories that go into the grade and her lectures and explanations are really good and helpful! You do have to go to almost every lecture because she has clicker questions (Zoom polls since it was online) but you don't need all the points to get 100% for that category. Every week there's a problem set (not all are graded) and homework from Sapling. We had 5 quizzes and they weren't very difficult. Another review talked about how one of them was messed up but Quinlan ended up canceling it and replaced the score with the average of the other quizzes plus 5 points. The midterm wasn't bad and it was kind of easy, there's an individual part and a group part. I thought the final was much more difficult but then again I slacked off at the end of the quarter. If you study you'll likely do well. We also had peer review homeworks which I didn't like. Overall I think Quinlan is a great professor especially if you struggle with chem and the class structure is also great!
Quinlan was a good professor to have for 14B this quarter! During lecture, Professor Quinlan was always engaging and helpful with the material. You could tell she has a passion for teaching and sometimes she added in extra biographies about chemists from marginalized populations. Our discussion sections were solely used for working on the problem sets with a small group. We had one midterm with an individual and group part and a final. Neither test was extremely challenging and was similar to the questions from the quizzes/problem sets. We were also allowed to have a cheat sheet for each test that was turned in for credit.
This was her first quarter teaching 14B online, and as a result, there were some flaws with the class and the learning environment. My main issue with the class was that there were a lot of deadlines to keep track of. We had weekly problem sets, clicker questions for participation, semi-weekly sapling assignments, CPR writing assignments, an extra credit seminar, and 5 quizzes throughout the quarter in addition to an individual midterm, group midterm, and a final. This was a very big difference from having Scerri for 14A who had a more… minimalistic approach to assignments. In addition, our third quiz was poorly written and ended up being dropped and regraded. These problems should hopefully be worked out by the next quarter she teaches this class. Overall, I would recommend taking 14B with Quinlan.
The grading for this class is as follows:
Problem Sets 16%
CPR Homework 10%
Midterm 20% (16% for individual, 4% for group)
Quizzes 20%
Final 25%
In-class quizzes 0.5% (these were dropped)
Clicker Questions 4% (75% participation)
Surveys 0.5%
Dr. Quinlan was a great professor. In terms of lecturing, she is really helpful at making you understanding certain concepts such as thermodynamics and acid-base titrations by working through numerous problems sort of step by step. Additionally, the midterms and the finals were very straightforward. She really doesn't like putting out curve ball questions at you. She even says that she's not trying to do that. Her tests were very fair. With her quizzes (for online), she gave multiple attempts. The quizzes were not hard in general although there was one quiz that was confusing to which she gave everyone full points for (I believe). In addition to that, I liked the syllabus of the class because your grade is not based purely on exams (unlike other chem classes in 14 series). I liked that she gave more weight to quizzes problem sets CPR and participation because they were easier to get full points for. At the end I only had to get like a C on the final to still have an A. Not like I actually got it ( I still tried my best), but it did give me some piece of mind in case I had a nervous breakdown during the test which was nice.
I really liked Professor Quinlan! She is very concerned about student learning and she is very straightforward. She is also super approachable and takes steps to make sure students are given what they need to succeed. For example, she asks you to put your questions on CCLE forums for the other students to see. But she also allows you to email her your questions and she will post them anonymously if you are self-conscious about your question.
She gives you a template for her lectures before lecture. She writes on them during lecture and then uploads those notes after class. I personally prefer this to podcasting, because she writes down all the important things in the notes. She also pauses to write things down so you aren't scribbling your notes during lecture.
The tests are extremely fair; our class averages were pretty high for the midterms. You also get a cheat sheet.
My only complaint about this class is that the tablet she uses doesn't work too well for handwriting notes. They can get illegible at times, but you can just ask her for clarification,
Quinlan is a great professor and I wish she taught more courses because I would definitely take them with her.
Margot is just super clear about everything. If you look back at all the material she taught about in lecture, you could see how structured her stuff is. Weekly problem sets help a lot and the TAs are super helpful as well. Margot also brought in real life discoveries and actual papers to apply the theory to let us see the big picture. Great experience overall and I really learned a lot from this class.
