Maybe it was because it was her first year teaching this class, but overall this class was a MESS! Professor Csapo was very nice and probably had very good intentions for her students, yet her organization, clarity, and commitment to her students lagged throughout the entire quarter.
The class consists of lectures (optional w/ slides posted online although like 2 weeks late), discussion section participation, a term long research project (including a portion where you have to interview an expert in the policy field you are researching), an essay final, and three homework assignments. Her grading breakdown was a little funky with the homework assignments totaling 35% but the research project only worth 30%.
She would always come to class late (always with her coffee so we know why), fails o communicate with students or the TAs via email, and often got on long tangents in lecture only to go through four slides before class was over. Id recommend skipping lecture except for the last week when she does a large review which is helpful.
Her final (due to COVID) was transitioned online and included two essay prompts that were due in an hour and a half. Reasonable and open note which is a plus. The homework assignments were easy, but time consuming (busy work) and the research project had a lot of components that were not fully explained or integrated well into the course.
Overall, be prepared to be left in the dark if you take this class with her. The content is largely a review of AP Gov/APUSH so its not too hard at all and some topics (gerrymandering, impeachment, reforming the constitution) are somewhat interesting. At least the TAs are understanding of Prof. Csapo's lack of communication so just make sure you have a good relationship with them.
Super sweet professor! I encourage everyone to take this class but just know that final research paper was a bit heavy. As long as you pace yourself you should be fine. Professor Csapo is very committed to student learning and is very approachable in OH. Class attendance isn't mandatory and she gives great feedback on student assignments.
Let me begin by saying that professor Csapo is my favorite professor in the Poli Sci department at UCLA. Her slides and the way she engaged course material was really helpful. She’s an amazing professor, I have no idea why she has such a low rating! I would definitely recommend her course.
Professor Csapo is one of my favorite professors I've had at UCLA. She really cares about her students and their success in her class, and is always willing to answer questions and engage with people both in and out of lecture. She is a very fair grader and always addresses areas that she thinks need to be elaborated on which is very refreshing for this department. I highly recommend taking her class if you have the opportunity to!
You will get as much out of this class as you put into it. If you put effort in and ask for help, even if you don't have any basis for statistical knowledge, you will do well. Dr. Csapo is very accommodating for circumstances, and is a super nice person in general. If you need help, go to office hours and get help. Dr. Csapo is very accessible and the TA Mckenna was very good at answering questions as well.
Dr. Csapo was an amazing teacher! She was responsive to student needs, and she always did the most for the class despite everything she was going through in her personal life. She covered current events and really took input from previous classes. I would 10/10 take again, UCLA hire her back !
Difficult but achievable A. Great professor.
Prosfessor Csapo was the BEST! The other reviews seemed misleading, and maybe it was different last year, but her class was SO fun and she is genuinely one of the sweetest professors I have ever met. I learned a lot from her class and did not feel it was a difficult course. I only have good things to say about this class so PLEASE take it with Professor Csapo!
I wanted to review this class just to warn all the public affairs majors, minors, and pre-majors out there. Do not take this class with Csapo unless you absolutely hate to! It is decently easy and I got an A without really studying or putting in much effort, but I learned absolutely nothing from the class itself. Csapo's lectures were confusing and disorganized, and so were her assignments, assessments, and pretty much everything else about the class.
She seems like a nice person, but this class was a hot mess. Completely disorganized, no structure, and I felt like I learned nothing beyond what I already knew from standard high school APUSH. Do not recommend!
I took this class as a pre-req for PA and I honestly thought it was so hard because I am not a STEM student and coding/stats does not come easily to me but the teaching team are very easy graders and very helpful when you are stuck or confused.
