Quarter Taken: Spring 2019 Submitted Dec. 2, 2019 Grade Received: A-

I didn't do great on the midterm or the one page discussion essays. I thought I could kind of just wing it, but that didn't work out. I studied more for the final and ended up getting an A- when I for sure thought I would get a B. DO the readings and take note of little details, also go to Jepson's office hours! No one really goes and he answered questions about the final for me that really helped.

I really like that there were only short 1-page assignments, the workload was pretty light that way - but you really did have to do the reading properly for those assignments to be a breeze. Just really prepare short answers for the midterm/final study guides and you're set for the exams. The class is curved so that's great. I know it's an 8 am, but he has a pretty opinionated story-telling style of lecturing and doesn't make it too hard to concentrate.

The classes are held at 8am with no lecture slides. Jepson literally stands at the podium and talks for an hour and a half straight so either record the lecture or make sure to have some coffee. While the content itself is interesting, the way the papers and tests are structured makes it really really easy to lose marks. Also, make sure you get a good TA or you are screwed.

Honestly, I hated this class. As if 8ams aren't already hard to get up for, Jepson was the most disorganized non-sequitur lecturer I've had at UCLA. Each class I had no idea what was going to come out of his mouth and I don't think he did either. He doesn't really use slides either- he fought with the projector/computer every class just to put up what are nonsensical notes pasted into CCLE. I went to this class about 50% of the time and got an A+, I really think you just need to go through all the readings thoroughly (you definitely can't just skim them because multiple choice questions on the exam get weirdly specific). The other key to this class is having a good relationship with your TA and engaging in discussion sections- they do all the grading and can make or break you since Jepson allows them to give very few perfect scores on assignments and tests. If Amber is TAing again she's great! Overall, woof I don't think I would recommend this class unless you absolutely have to.

The material is pretty interesting, but the tests and biweekly assignments are really hard. The midterm is multiple choice and short answer, and basically everyone did horribly. The TAs grade the discussion essays pretty hard. Not a boring class, but not an easy one at all. Don't take this for an easy GE.

As long as you do the readings and participate in discussion, the class will be easy. Do not procrastinate on the readings and assignments as you should not with any other class. There are study guides released for the midterms and final, however, it is wise that you have read the readings and do the study guides thoroughly and detailed. This is to ensure that if you do free response on the midterms, that you understand what the readings were truly about and that you are able to explain them in a thorough manner that will give you all of the points. Make sure you know the main points of the readings, not the overall summary of the readings.

You must attend discussion and discussion is graded on participation and attendance. You form groups and talk about the assigned reading for discussion in that week. I actually enjoyed this part of the class since it was very inviting to talk.

However, choose your TA wisely. Your TA grades your six one-page assignments that is submitted periodically throughout the quarter. These assignments are double spaced and therefore are not super time-consuming to do. Although this class is graded on a curve, my TA is such a harsh grader and deducts points for the smallest things. He asks us to put specific details on the assignment that was NOT even asked of us to write in the ACTUAL ASSIGNMENT PROMPT. Therefore, do not take Pablo as your TA. He grades down for no legitimate reason.

Other than that, I genuinely enjoy the lectures. I had this class at 8 am and although it was hard to go on several days and I was half asleep through many of the lectures, the interesting topics being discussed in lecture kept me awake and consistently intrigued in how our society is incredibly messed up and how Western society is especially socially constructed to benefit a particular group of people. Very interesting class, 10/10 recommend. I hope you get a good TA.

Take Soc 1 with Jepson! This class has still been my favorite class at UCLA so far. Jepson is such an amazing professor. His lectures got me motivated to come at 8 a.m. M/W if that says anything. It was a really eye-opening class to say in the least.

The exams are fair since they're not accumulative, but they do require you to know some details based on the readings. The only tough thing about this class is the writing assignments. They're graded only out of 5 points, so it can be quite unforgiving as it just depends on your TA. Often times I felt like I answered the response, but still could not get a decent grade on them. They're deceivingly tricky for only being one page long, but I guess that is a plus side if writing isn't your strong suit, since other GE's usually have longer essays.

This was the first class I took at UCLA and honestly it wasn't so bad. However I'm sure there are easier GE's in this school b/c i wouldn't call this class an "easy A." There were readings each week that were time consuming at times but honestly going to lecture really helps, so even just skimming the readings would be okay. The 8 a.m's are probably the only reason I wouldn't take this class again though. But at least the topics were super interesting and made it worthwhile my time. Next there were 5 one-pagers in total (one page summary of an article we read) that were pretty easy, no long essay. Finally the exams were manageable, of course he'll try to trick you on some but just pay attention in lecture and you should be fine. Overall I would recommend Jepson to another friend because he does make jokes, is nice, tolerates tardiness, & he picks really good/interesting topics for us to go over for the quarter.

Professor Jepson is pretty great. He's really funny and entertaining and the class is interesting. I didn't go to the majority of the lectures and still got an A in the class. Would definitely recommend if you need an easy GE. This class is also really interesting so you won't get bored.

Thought this was a fine class, more interesting than some other soc classes. If you attend class, listen, and read the readings you will be fine.
