How well you do in the class really depends on your TA, it is the biggest determining factor in your final grade.
Jepson was funny sometimes, he's pretty sarcastic. His lecturing style was a bit difficult to follow because he doesn't write anything down and literally just talks for the majority of the time. So if you're a slow writer/typer it might be a bit difficult.
I liked him, but you might not. It all depends.
I had high expectations coming into the class because of previous ratings. I expected him to be a very interesting and engaging professor that kept me interested in all of his lectures. But he isn't that at all. All he does during the lectures is ramble on about the readings that he assigns from the course reader. His style of presentation is very boring and he pauses a lot when he speaks. He also tends to end his sentences with an intonation that sounds like he is asking a question. That bothered me A LOT and I just stopped going to his lectures after awhile. Moreover, he changed his course reader so the exams are different now and he doesn't let people take them back so they won't be in the test bank. Overall, I really did not enjoy this class at all. (south campus major)
Jepson is a joke. I absolutely detested his entire set of lectures. The readings are by far some of the most fascinating things I have ever read, BUT when he reviews them he makes a mockery of what these readings have to say. He pulls things out of context, incorporates his own opinions (and assumes his opinion is fact)then spits out things such as "Black women cannot find black men to marry because all Black men are already in jail." I'm sure there is statistical evidence to back this up, but to blatantly say it in such a crude manner is offensive and rude. Comments like these are not rare, I would catch something racist or offensive in ever lecture. I truly did not enjoy this class in the slightest and refuse to ever take Jepson again.
This class was...alright. My expectations of Jepson were high based on the reviews that I read on here. I expected him to make an 8AM class bearable and fun, but boy was I wrong. He was only funny because he would throw out some cuss words and use a good joke every now and then, but in general, the class was pretty boring. I dreaded waking up to go to his class. He wasn't a horrible teacher, and is a good person, but he just wasn't very interesting and lectured off topic too many times. The tests are fair, the multiple choice can be tricky, but for the most part I found them easy. The essay questions are like the TA discussion questions, so hopefully that'll help. For the first midterm, I recommend going to the test bank. He reused a lot of the old questions.
Overall, you can take this class if you want to get the GE requirement out of the way. Make sure you actually work on those papers, because they can screw you over. My TA was very strict with the way she wanted the papers done, which was irritating, but after you submit a few, you get the hang of it. Be concise.
He is funny and he does a good job of summarizing what you need to grab from the readings if you didn't understand them. However, I didn't find them too helpful. This class is easy if you have an easy TA. The tiny writing assignments really screwed me over because my TA wasn't helpful even when I asked for him for help. My TA didn't even know the readings that well himself and I felt that he was super inadequate and graded a bit more harshly than other TAs. I ended up with a B in the class but also think that's because I thought the class was so easy. Take the writing assignments very seriously and don't settle for anything than 5/5 or 7/7!!! Don't be fooled they're 30% of your grade! Anyway, selling my course reader. It's highlighted and has some helpful notes in some of the readings but not all: *************
One of the best and easiest classes I have ever taken. He is a great professor, very real and entertaining. The course work is pretty easy you only have to write 5 papers that are one page long each (double spaced). Also he has been giving the same midterm and final for the past couple of years so going to the test bank is the best bet you got. Adding to that he gives you a study guide which is really helpful! And to make it even better the course material is quite interesting. Easy A class!
Easily one of the best professors I've had at UCLA. His lectures are quite engaging and actually keep you awake for an 8AM. Jepson is a funny man too. He isn't afraid to spark a debate in between lectures and he loves to hear student opinions. If this is a GE that you might be interested in, take it. It is fair and interesting--what more would you want? His tests consist of approximately 40-50 multiple choice questions that are primarily based on his course reader (a few questions are based on lecture) and a list of essay prompts from which you choose two to answer in one page. If you do the reading (some are difficult, others are easier, but most are interesting), then you'll be good. Going to lecture is a given; but that wouldn't be a problem because his lectures are interesting and start your day off great! Also, he gives you a study guide before both the midterm and final. He mentions that he won't add anything else on the test that isn't on the study guide. For the most part, he stuck to his word! Great professor!
Great lecturer and personable guy. Sometimes he reminded me of a conspiracy theorist at times, but it made it more enjoyable. He welcomed different opinions, but the lectures were at 8 a.m. for two hours so I was itching to get out at times.
Tests were tricky, just because the answers were very ambiguous for me. He curved ridiculously though.
Readings were easy and some were pretty interesting. His lectures were basically going over the reading, but he did add concepts.
All in all, he's a cool guy :)
