AVOID. This is already a tough class and the professor makes it impossible. Unless you are seriously considering a masters in math, do not take this professor. I usually overlook comments that say how tough a professor is and I end up doing just fine. It will not be the case with this professor. A class average of 20% on a final is ridiculous.
This review is for Math 61 class. But i think it's the same for every of classes he teaches. He is super nice but not know how to explain stuff. He doesn't copy exactly the concepts in the text onto the board, it is fine of course, but his wording is weird and confusing. One time, for the graph theory, I pre-read the book and understood the concepts, but after his lecture, I became so confused and had to re-read the book to confirm what I understood from the book. Examples in class are jokes compared to homework and his exams. His exams are ridiculously hard and I only got about 50% and 70% for the midterms. Some freaking geniuses still managed to get >90%. I almost dropped the class because I thought I would fail. Miraculously, I did extremely well on the final and got 90%, and unbelievably ended up with an A. Again, I thought I was failing the class. The only thing I did to save my life in this class was to study the concepts over and over again, did every past test I could find online, even from different campuses (his exams are not similar to any though, but doing such things really helped). At least 2 people that I know did not end up good, one dropped the class after the second midterm, one didn't get really good grade. I actually suggested these 2 classmates to do what I did and invited them to study together, but they didnt want to. Overall, this class gave me a really horrible experience: nice but bad professor, weirdo TA, dudes in class that said "if you want we can study together" and were always busy when I asked them to meet up, so I ended up study all by myself and saved my own life.
I attended his first several lectures but only to find that I could not understand anything. Then I learned everything by my self. Yet though my grades seem to be within A range, I only got an A-. This course should be extremely useful for engineering and science students, and if you want to learn it well, never take his class.
The lecture is totally useless. He purely repeated the info on the book, even with the example on the book. And his volume is so low that i can't hear some of the words even sitting at the first few rows. Quiz is really unfair. Some of the sessions have really easy problems while others have problems that take TA more than ten minutes to complete on the board (excuse me?). The midterms are full of true and false questions that you will have no idea about how to approach them. AVOID HIM
Of all the math courses I've taken at UCLA so far, this was the worst one, all thanks to professor Gallauer. Others nailed everything about his lectures: boring, quiet, not engaging, give nothing outside of the book, you have no idea what's half of them are about and they're simply are a waste of time. You really are pretty much on your own with the book as your best guide. Thanks to professor Gallauer, this course consumed an enormous amount of time because lectures gave nothing and every topic had to be started from scratch afterwards using the book.
The thing that annoyed me the most though is the fact that he gave the latest topics on both midterms, and what's worse, made the problems based on those topics have the most points. Who does that? How about you let us process the material properly first, and only then test us on it? To sum up, if you want to have a good 33A experience and actually learn it the proper way, avoid taking this guy at all costs. You will seriously regret your decision if you still choose to take him.
Please don't take him. He talks too softly and unclearly in class. It's hard to recognize what he says, and moreover, his handwriting is really bad. It might be better to read the textbook at home. Unfortunately, his tests were tough.
Professor Gallauer gives lecture with very low voice and his handwriting is small and not easy to read... Avoid his class if you rely heavily on the lectures to understand class materials. Also, his tests are kind of difficult...
