Prof Hackmann is one of the best professors I've ever encountered, especially within the Econ department. He was very responsive via email, he answered questions very clearly, class content itself was straightforward, interesting and extremely relevant to the reality of healthcare. I liked the international range of examples given as well. Textbook was comprehensive without being an overload and it was very clear too. I liked the problem set set-up (there were four of them to complete) where we were pre-assigned teams to complete problem sets together. I thought the workload was very fair (four problem sets, one mid-term, one final, and he provided two sets of practice mid-terms and finals too). Exams were reasonable and called for some application that depended on conceptual understanding, i.e. perfectly fair game. All in all, a great elective and the only unfortunate thing is that he isn't teaching more undergrad econ classes!

Professor Hackmann is wonderful! He is very patient and tries to make the lectures as engaging as possible by often asking questions to the class and setting up polls during Zoom. The homework he gives is also very helpful to practice the math for the course. He also has practice finals and midterms with answers posted right from Week 1 I believe giving you ample time to practice for the exams. There was 1 midterm, 4 problem sets which he assigns as a group so you can work together, and a final. During office hours he is very willing to answer any type of questions be it research-related or hw related. He would actually go over the entire hw problem with solutions and explanations giving us an opportunity to not only learn but also get it right at the same time. I would def recommend this class as an econ elective. Good luck!
