Her lectures are disorganized and messy but really funny! She is entertaining and makes jokes. It's a take-home midterm and final. The prompts are usually posted a week before they're due. The final has a ten-page Intellectual Autobiography but it's credit/no credit. Try to go to office hours (usually on Zoom) and EMAIL HER TO GRADE YOUR PAPERS!!! The TAs/readers destroy the papers, but she's a chill grader. Also, she is chill with late work. I submitted my final the next day it was due and it was good. Just email her and talk to her if you need help, she is very understanding. Honestly, you don't have to do all the weekly readings. Just pick a few to focus on for the midterm/final. You do need to read a book and write about it as part of your final. I didn't read mine and did fine. Also, you can miss lectures every now and then. If you attend class and have a general idea of what the readings are you should be fine. This was a low-effort history class and it was pretty fun. I would take it again!
The highlight of Corey's class was that her lectures are very funny, which made the class entertaining and she is obviously very intelligent. However, the downside of her class was that she is not very approachable, and is kind mean and humiliates her students when they ask questions (which can be funny sometimes but also scary).
I recommend going to office hours because she focuses on the students that attend and will personally grade your papers, and you won't be obliterated by the readers that grade the remainder of the class.
The only assignments are an essay midterm, a ten-page autobiography (which is not graded), and for the final essay similar to the midterm and a book report. I do recommend reading the material she provides because it does help once the midterm and final come along but it is a lot.
Overall, I did really enjoy the class, but I only recommend taking it if you are willing to commit to going to class regularly and attending office hours. Read the other reviews for her classes as they perfectly reflect what you will be getting yourself into.
I never write reviews on this darn site but given the misconceptions peddled around Professor Corey on here I figured I'd try and provide a counter balance. There is a midterm essay and a final essay, as with most of her classes, in which you have ample choice of prompt and are straightforward. Going to office hours even if just near the date of the essay due dates will reveal almost line by line the thesis she is looking for any prompt that you ask about. She will also personally grade your paper if you attend her office hours even once. The course material is far more engaging and novel than anything you will find in other history courses and she has a rich history herself, which she uses to inform her lectures. She is the most articulate professor I've ever had and expects nothing other than your interest and willingness to listen. Very low stress course as is revealed by the grade distributions.
Professor Corey is a bit silly and doesn't know what shes doing with technology. A lot of reading and writing papers. I would not suggest this class.
