Just to let people know, the people who said she was boring aren't just upset at the class or their grade. Her lectures are ACTUALLY uninteresting as hell. I would exercise and be so energetic in the morning and somehow (I am not even lying to you) I got really sleepy as if I hadn't slept for weeks, I don't even know how she does it.

Our TA was good, and so I ended up doing well, but if you're TA is f'd up then well so your grade will be, unless you just complain and complain for help and get tutoring with AAP.

In retrospect, though, I really liked how she broke down the class into three parts and her readings were widely used in all the classes I'm taking now.

Overall, it's kind of a burden to take this class and usually you take her because she's the only one teaching that class, and you get a limited amount of time to do the big assignments. She's nice though, it was just a hard process of committing. I got an A- though. You gotta be grateful for the hard work you put into this bullssshht class.

I actually really enjoyed Prof. Hart's class. She is very knowledgeable, has well-prepared lectures, and provides a lot of background information to the readings. The reading was surprisingly light, although dense, and the themes were really interesting. The things going on in the U.S. economy paralleled some of the concepts we discussed, so it was cool to look at the parallels. I don't understand why people expect professors to be entertainers.. she lectures, lets you ask questions and discuss, and shows some Powerpoint slides.. which is more than some professors bother to do. The subject is inherently dry if you're not interested in sociology.. in which case I suggest you open your mind and take advantage of the amazing opportunity you have at UCLA to learn from really accomplished people and be introduced to new ideas. We only had 3 short papers(2500 words max) throughout the quarter and no final exam.
If you're looking for a great introduction to capitalism sociological theory with a knowledgeable professor, this class is it.

Really, Prof. Hart is not the horrible academic everyone makes her out to seem. Instead, her expertise in medical sociology and healthcare politics is highly relevant to our times, and she backs it up with sociological theory. She lectures on three different themes that could be courses all on their own, and is able to mesh them well. You do have to invest in the class, which does require a lot of reading, but you will come out feeling like you have learned something that will be useful as a citizen. Testing can be improved upon, but she is open to suggestions. Get off your lazy butt and attend discussion section!

Professor Hart is a good resource of information on this topic. Her lectures could be a bit dry sometimes but paying attention and taking notes does help. There is a ton of reading you must for this class. I wouldn't recommend taking this class in conjunction with another heavy reading Soc class. If you do the readings and make good outlines on the key points and use the information Professor gave you as being the heart you should do well over all. I would try and only take this class with Kate as your TA, cause I don't know how I would have made it through had she not been there. Towards the end the material becomes more interesting, well at least to me. You learn a lot about food though and the sociological implications it has on us. Interesting stuff overall.
