It was an interesting class, but I don't agree it was easy.
I don't like that he posts the powerpoints after class because I want to add notes to the powerpoints from lecture to explain them further so I get it. Because of this after midterm I never went to class, but just looked at ppt and listened to recording and I ended up doing better on the final than the midterm... I am assuming because I was too passive during lecture since it was hard to look up on board to see what is included in ppt what do I need to write down..etc
To me it was difficult since the test questions are scenario based and sometimes it can be a bit ambiguous.
He does go in circles a bit during lecture like over and over again but in a way that is good since I think you really get the material that way. I had a similar experience when I took social psych lower division I thought it was self explanatory and no need to study but since the tests tend to be scenario based you REALLY need to know the material very well. I also did all the extra credit. He doesn't curve the class either. I did get an A, but it is a shame that I felt it was a waste going to class since I didn't have access to the power points during class and I know he doesn't want to change that. But ah well. Other than that he is so approachable and knowledgeable and he never makes you feel stupid when you ask questions like many other prof's do.
This was one of the best, most interesting classes I've ever taken during my UCLA career. Lieberman is a great lecturer--he is very organized and is always willing to answer questions or repeat anything that is unclear.
The class itself consisted of 40% midterm, 40% final, and 20% discussion participation. For most weeks, you had to submit a "seed" prior to discussion (basically any thoughtful comment or question on the assigned reading). I honestly skimmed most of the readings because the TAs outlined and went over what we needed to know for the exams anyway.
Make sure to know the takeaway messages on the studies he presents in class. If you understand the conclusions and importance of those studies, you should do fine on the exams.
He also gives 3 points extra credit for participating in psych studies! Although he doesn't round up, his class is definitely manageable--I ended up with a solid A in the class even though I wasn't always caught up on the lectures and readings. I highly recommend this class! You'll learn a lot about yourself and the world around you.
I took 137G with Lieberman. Lets start with my GPA: 3.83. His class had way too many readings and he would get sidetracked in lecture. His powerpoints are disorganized and he grades harshly. I think the below posts were trolls because no way 90% of people would get an A... Think about it.
Lieberman is AWESOME. Super smart guy, pretty easy class, and interesting stuff.
HOWEVER, don't write off this class for nothing, you still really need to study. Like you need to know it inside and out to be able to do the test questions. (but studying for it shouldn't take you that long).
Loved the class, learned a lot. Super interesting guy. take him!
Prof. Lieberman is great, and I think that everyone in the Psych department should take him. He goes over some key concepts that are very useful and introduces you to a few interesting books (you only have to read a few chapters out of each). He offers 3 extra credit points (worth 1.5% of your grade) and the exams were pretty fair. Although the material is interesting, sometimes I felt overwhelmed by the amount of information presented (there is a lot of studies and concepts). Overall, great class.
One of the best professors and one of the best classes I've taken while at UCLA.
The class is REALLY interesting! I enjoyed it and would definitely recommend the class itself, as well as Lieberman.
There's 2 multiple choice tests, there's 4 (novel) books to read - not all in their entirety just certain chapters, and you go over them in discussion. Plus he gives extra credit.
Amazing class.
I took this class way, way before he started handing out everyone 90% A's.
He has this policy where if you get 90% of the top 90% then you get an A, and he makes the test either really hard/easy, so everyone gets pleased with their A.
Not so lucky, as I got a B when he gave around 30% to 20% B's when I should have gotten at least an A-
I had the Asian TA with the British accent. She docked off 3% off of my grade for discussion even when I participated more and just as much than my friends and anyone else in that discussion.
Also during exam time, she would answer my questions about multiple choice questions with vague answers, while another TA would say "Oh Silly!, that choice is obviously the wrong answer, it's this one" Couldn't flag that TA down as I always got my TA who wouldn't give any direct answer. She did when I came to OH to look at my exam and laugh saying "that's obviously the wrong answer" to each one I asked about
Social Psychology is suppose to be fun to learn and one of the best classes you take in your college career. It wasn't for me, I could already see that people were in love with him before they took the class as less than half the students were giving him the finger during the first lecture including he. He says it's because he's wearing a suit, but no, it's because of Bruinwalk and the rumors that he's an easy A, there used to be another professor who taught Social Psych who gave 5% A's but people loved him, I really question whether people would have the same feelings with Lieberman if he started doing that
