Professor Malkan talks condescendingly to his students. His lectures are very verbose and the point is not clear. He tries to be funny but is not. He treats his class like children. He doesn't give lectures on Fridays, so you're stuck scrambling to play catch up on your own time. His exams are unjustifiably long and difficult given the time to do them.
Do NOT take this guy. Take Niemann or some other physics professor instead. Malkan does NOT help you learn physics and is not as friendly as he tries to be. If you can, wait another quarter to get a different professor.

He desperately tries to be funny in every lecture which is really annoying because none of his jokes are funny. He looks like someone who would make fun of you if you ask a question so nobody asks anything in lectures. He is not approachable. He uses powerpoint slides for teaching physics. Who does that? You basically have to learn everything on your own using the book or internet. He has a super annoying voice and he changes the pitch of his voice, I guess to make the lectures less boring but that just makes them more intolerable. He gave a 7 page midterm for a 50 minute exam. Homework is assigned on mastering physics which is another pain in the neck. It takes a whole day to answer those problems using the tools and functions of the program. Do not take a class with him if you want to actually learn physics and get a good grade.

This teacher is an absolute RUDE, INSENSITIVE, JERK. He might act funny and nice during lectures, but it's all an act. I honestly thought I liked him and his class during the quarter. I realized too late that I didn't do well on the last midterm and final. I knew my grade wouldn't change, but I was concerned since I worked so hard and thought he could at least give me advice. I know its no excuse, but my very close aunt was passing away during that time AND eventually passed away the day before the final. After dealing with so much death in my family in such a short period of time, this one REALLY set me back and I was emotionally devastated, so when I asked for advice and help after receiving a failing grade, I expected him to deliver the additional bad news like a decent human being. HOWEVER, he was rude and sarcastic and revelled in belittling my situation and the passing of my aunt. Avoid this teacher if you can help it. I was honestly shocked by his lack of tact and the fact that he got so much enjoyment out of making one of his students feel so bad about themselves and their situation.

Horrible teacher. He is a funny guy but lecture is completely irrelevant. I emailed him to correct him on when homework was due and he completely shut me down saying I did not read it correctly and that I need to figure out what is going on in the class because he cannot babysit students. After the extremely condescending email he emailed me again 3 hours later realizing he made a mistake and that I was correct. He didn't even apologize. There is a level of respect a professor should have for students that he completely lacked. I would never take him again. Avoid at all costs.

Malkan wouldn't even do me the decency of sending me a polite email when I had questions about enrolling in his class. He was so condescending. Whatever you do, don't get on his bad side.
