Okay I have a lot of thoughts about Prof. Wink. I had him for Math 3A the first time that he taught. I took calc AB in hs and I did very poorly, and I was super worried coming into this class. The material is difficult, and even people who were wizards in AB and BC struggled because of the way he taught it. He loved using proofs and being conceptual instead of plugging in numbers and showing examples. His tests are difficult but there isn't anything that catches you off guard. The only problem is that for the midterms, he doesn't give us enough time so I felt really rushed and I was never really confident with my answers. However, on the final, we had wayyy more time so I performed a lot better. The final wasn't easier than the midterm, we just had more time. You definitely have to be a fast test taker.

He is a very sweet guy, and I definitely would take the class with him again if I had to. He is not very forgiving but he's reasonable and I personally liked him. Tiny guy too, looks like a student when he walks in.

I get why people give him low ratings, but I liked the way he taught. By teaching with pure proofs, he was making sure that we actually understood the material rather than just plugged and chugged. I got a B- (like super borderline C+) in calc AB and I did well in this class.

This one of his first quarters (?) teaching, so Wink constantly tried to make the workload and overall grading easier for students. However, as someone who is horrible at math, the tests proved extremely difficult for me due to the lack of a calculator and the overall explanation of the problems. Practice homework problems mimic the exam format but are much easier. Learning objectives were not very clear aside from a summary of the general topics being covered.

Wink is terrible at teaching. The lecture material never transferred to the exams or homework. I really relied on reading the textbook and going to TA office hours to learn anything. Material isn't crazy hard, but because he doesn't explain it well it makes the class so much harder than it needs to be.

I never took Calculus in high school and this was my first time and I was so lost in the class. His test was extremely hard for me especially the midterm. For the second midterm, he went over and focused on things that were not even on the midterm. He is a nice guy but he doesn't know how to teach and I went to his office hours too but I just didn't understand the way he explained things.

Oh, Matthias. This professor did not know how to teach mathematics. He was a very knowledgable man but his lectures were disorganized and rushed and he wrote very small on the board and people could barely see what he was writing. He didn't give us nearly enough resources to practice the material. This being said, it was his very first quarter at UCLA and he was just getting his feet wet. I feel like he tried his best but wasn't prepared to teach this class. Maybe he's improved though. Also, the material on the tests reflected what we went over in class and in the homework most of the time.

This class was not too difficult in terms of content, especially if you had some background of differential calculus. Professor Wink is very knowledgeable on the subject, however he did not explain the concepts very well if at all. His lectures will have you leaving more confused on the subject than if you never even went... which I stopped doing after week 2. He tried his best in lectures, but he would try to teach conceptually and never plugged numbers in or gave example problems. His homework problems were doable but not comparable to anything you would see on the exams. The two midterms were very difficult and were tough to finish in the time allotted. However, since the averages on the midterms were so bad, he made the final super easy and gave us a nice curve!
