I thought he'd be the easiest professor I'd ever take yet I got one of the worst grades I've ever gotten at UCLA with him (a B+).
Apparently, he's a lot harder in the summer. His midterm was rather easy, but his final was just completely ambiguous. I'm sure if you fully invest in his class, you'll get an A, but having to had work over the summer as well as worry about other classes during session C, his class was by no means a pleasant experience. But that's just my 2 cents.
Not recommended. He's just gotten harder than what he used to because students have told him that his class is too easy. He's nice and likes being easy, but is starting to be upset about how students are taking advantage of his easygoing personality.
Lofchie is an excellent lecturer. I highly recommend him.
His tests are fairly easy. If you can get your hands on old midterms/finals, you are set. Dont even have to study that much.
The readings are really interesting but it is unlikely you will remember every detail.
If you pay attention in lecture, he emphasizes the things that will probably show up on the test.
If you do not understand something, go see the TA or Lofchie in office hours, they are pretty useful.
Very interesting class. Fairly easy.
Grade Received: A
Don't be fooled by the comments below. If any of you guys look at his grade distributions, you'll see that most of us got B's. If you're looking for a super easy A, this is not your class. Expect to be worked, expect to have a lot of readings, and expect to be confused by his disorganized lectures. You've been warned.
Best political science professor at UCLA. Easiest lower division class, a midterm (33% of overall grade) and a final (66% of overall grade). Automatic B at the very least, very easy to obtain an A as well. Midterm and final consist of 35-45 multiple choice questions, and 1-2 short answers. The past exams are available in the SAC Test Bank, and many questions from the past exams are recycled. Easy readings, great lectures. Highly recommend, as opposed to other professors such as Thies.
The only criticism I have of Professor Lofchie is that he does not teach enough Poli Sci classes!
He is such an intelligent, articulate professor, and it is a delight to be in his class, because you can immediately tell he absolutely loves the material he teaches.
The class is EXTREMELY easy; simple (interesting) readings; one or two difficult ones that he always addresses in classes; and only a midterm and final.
The midterm is about 35 multiple choice questions and 1 essay question. The final is a little more multiple choice questions and 2 essay questions (but both are taken in class, so you should be done in an hour and half AT MOST).
Lofchie even ADMITS that he is very lenient in the grading, and honestly, any UCLA student who complains about this course shouldn't even go to UCLA. The multiple choice questions are SO basic and easy; even the essay question for the midterm literally made me roll my eyes because you could've asked me that question in week 1 or 2 of the course and I could have answered it.
I even had some non-poli sci friends take the course and they aced it. My main advice is to attend all the lectures. Lofchie says that he really puts a lot of effort into his lectures, so you should really pay attention to them (as most of them reinforce the readings anyway).
Take this professor - you won't regret it!
The readings are rather dense but for the most understandable. His lecture slides which were only somewhat organized. He would also go off tangent a lot, and seemed out of touch with students. The class is 33% midterm and 66% final, so while there is no homework or discussion, studying before hand is necessary (especially for the final which is cumulative and pretty specific).
He's the most adorable professor ever! On top of being very effective and entertaining, Lofchie cares about his students' learning and is very concerned. I highly recommend you to take him whenever you have the chance. You won't regret it, and the class is not too difficult, and fair.
I love Professor Lofchie!! I like the organized the class because he separates it well between British and French government. His slides were a bit disorganized, but I felt that he taught the materal very well. He is really concerned with student learning and is very welcoming to students who asks questions. He likes to end class early which is a plus. All of the reading was online so you don't need to buy any books. The midterm and final were really easy in my opinion. I highly recommend this class.
Effectiveness: The only negative comments I have about Prof. Lofchie is that his lectures are a little scattered and he seems ever-so-slightly out-of-touch with the students. However, it definitely seems like he has thoroughly thought through his required reading selection, and in that sense his readings are very "effective" in helping students understand the material.
Difficulty: I see no reason why he has a difficulty rating of higher than 2 or 3. Read the required reading and attend lecture occasionally and you will get an A. The material on his midterm and final is the stuff that both Prof. Lofchie and the readings emphasize over, and over, and over. If you get less than a B+ in his PS 50 class, I would consider dropping out of UCLA altogether.
Concern/Availability: Prof. Lofchie is very concerned about his students and always tries to make time for them. He tends to be flexible with his office hours, particularly around the time of the midterm and final exams.
Overall: Great personality, great professor. Highly recommended, especially as your first PS class.
Lofchie is an amazingly kind and generous professor. He will go out of his way to promote student learning and well being. I hardly believe that people can think that this class was difficult... literally over half of the class ultimately ended up getting As. Highly recommended.
